Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What organization determines the list of endangered/threatened species?

Answer: IUCN (The World Conservation Union)

The IUCN relies on the world's top scientists to gather information on the status of species. From these studies a list of species is compiled along with suggestions of conservation.
2. What is the name given to the list of endangered/threatened species?

Answer: The Red List of Threatened Species

Sometimes simply called the "Red List", it shows all critically endangered, endangered or vulnerable species as determined by extensive scientific studies.
3. The "Red List" includes which of the following?

Answer: Animals, Plants and Fungi

More specifically, the list includes mammals, invertebrates, reptiles, amphibians, fish, birds, plants and fungi.
4. What of the following has been alleged to be a major environmental factor in the loss of habitat for the polar bear?

Answer: Global warming

Some environmentalists have claimed that there will be about a 30% decrease in the number of polar bears by 2050, and that because polar bears reproduce at a slow rate, it will be difficult for them to adapt to the warming trend. However, estimates of polar bear numbers between 1980 and 2015 suggest that (far from being in a serious decline) their numbers are actually on the increase, so the problem could be less than is sometimes claimed.
5. Where do the most numerous hippopotamus populations reside?

Answer: East Africa

In 1996 the hippo population was said to be large enough to be secure. However, in the last 10 years their numbers were found to have decreased by up to 20%. They are hunted illegally for both meat and ivory.
6. Sometimes it is good news - for example the White-Tailed Eagle's status was changed to "least concern" recently. Which continent holds approximately 70% of the world's population of this bird?

Answer: Europe

Although in some areas their numbers continue to decrease, the increases elsewhere far outweigh the losses.
7. The Giant Bronze Gecko is currently listed as "vulnerable". This is because it has a very limited range of habitat. What is the area of its occupancy?

Answer: 13 square kilometers

This species resides only on the Seychelles islands of Silhouette and Praslin. Although there is currently no threat to this species, any change in such a small range would make it vulnerable.
8. The Manta Rays' large size and slow speed make them easy prey for fishermen. In the 1990's, how long did the fishing ban last in the Philippines?

Answer: 1 year

It was reported than over 1,000 rays were taken in the early months of 1996 so a ban was instituted in 1998. However, due to pressure from the locals, the ban was lifted in 1999. A subsequent study done saw the ban put forth again.
9. The Faviero de Wilson tree is found only in a limited area of southeastern Brazil. Why are people purposely destroying the species?

Answer: Its seeds can be harmful to pregnant cattle

In late 2005 into early 2006, 110 new plants were introduced and another 100 are currently being grown. A pamphlet has been distributed to encourage the community's participation in the conservation effort.
10. What is one of the reasons the WWF (World Wildlife Foundation) was created?

Answer: To educate and encourage conservation

Please visit the WWF's website for more information on the efforts to ensure a world filled with wonderful animals and plants for many generations to come.
