Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which cathedral has the tallest spire in England?

Answer: Salisbury

Salisbury Cathedral was consecrated in 1258 and has a spire 404 feet (123 metres) high. It was the subject of a famous painting by the 19th century artist, John Constable.
2. In which century was a place of Christian worship first built on the site of the present York Minster?

Answer: 7th century

The first church on the site was built by Oswald in 637 AD (7th century) and dedicated to St Peter. The present York Minster is also dedicated to the same saint.
3. Ann Boleyn, the second wife of King Henry the Eighth, was buried at Peterborough Cathedral.

Answer: False

It was Katherine of Aragon, Henry's first wife, who was buried at Peterborough in 1536. Ann Boleyn was executed the same year at the Tower of London, and her body was buried in an unmarked grave in the Chapel of St. Peter ad Vincula which adjoined the Tower Green.
4. Guildford is the home to one of England's newest cathedrals. Who was its architect?

Answer: Edward Maufe

Work started on the cathedral in 1933, and it was finally consecrated in 1961. However, it is not yet considered to be complete, and building continues!
5. Which was the first cathedral built in England?

Answer: Canterbury Cathedral

Work began on Canterbury Cathedral in 597 AD, when St Augustine established his "cathedra", or seat, on the site.
6. For many generations, the "Three Choirs Festival" has been held annually, rotating around three English Cathedrals. Which three are the hosts to this event?

Answer: Worcester, Hereford, Gloucester

The festival dates back to at least the early eighteenth century. As well as the three cathedral choirs, many musicians from around the world are invited to take part in what has become a major musical event.
7. The first cathedral at Coventry was built by the husband of Lady Godiva.

Answer: True

The first cathedral in Coventry was founded by Leofric, Earl of Mercia, in the year 1043 AD - his wife was the famed Lady Godiva who supposedly rode naked through the city in protest against taxes. The cathedral was devastated by Luftwaffe bombing on 14th November 1940, as was much of the city.

As part of the regeneration work it was decided to rebuild the cathedral, and the foundation stone was laid by HM the Queen on 23rd March 1956. The new building was consecrated just six years later.
8. The dome of St Paul's Cathedral in London is one of the earliest examples of a domed structure, dating from the twelfth century.

Answer: False

Although a cathedral, dedicated to St Paul, has stood on the present site since 604 AD, the building was destroyed during the Great Fire of London in 1666. The present building was designed by Christopher Wren (later "Sir"), and built between 1675 and 1710.
9. Where would you find the smallest cathedral in England?

Answer: Oxford

Although it is the smallest cathedral in England, Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford serves the largest diocese. It was built in the twelfth century and stands on the site of the former St Frideswide's Saxon church. The cathedral clock (Great Tom) strikes 101 times at 9.05pm each day (it has always been 5 minutes slow), so concerts held in the grounds are always timed so that intervals take place at that point!
10. The "Mappa Mundi", a 13th-century parchment depicting a map of the world, as it was understood to be at the time, can be seen in which English Cathedral?

Answer: Hereford

The map is housed at Hereford Cathedral, and is about 64 x 54 inches in size. It has Jerusalem as its centre, and covers all the known world, including India - depicted as being a land of great wealth and of some 5000 cities!
