Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What eight-day event happens in early October and involves many different stops along 40 miles of Highway 90 on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi?

Answer: Cruisin' The Coast

"Cruisin' The Coast" started as an annual event in 1996 with 374 registered vehicles, and is open to classic, hot rods and antique cars (25 years old or older). There are stops at most of the Mississippi Gulf Coast cities within 5 miles of Hwy 90.
The Mississippi Gulf Coast consists of three counties along the Gulf of Mexico, and in Harrison Country the highway follows the 26 mile long beach. In 2017, over 8,000 registered vehicles, along with many unregistered ones, drove along the coast. The official events take place during daylight hours while most of the casinos on the coast have special parking for the cruisers to attend their night events which are mainly 1950s themed.

The three other events are also real events. "Smokin' the Sound" is a power- boat race along casino row, just a couple of hundred feet off the beach alongside Hwy 90. The event is held over five days with the race finals on a Sunday in late April or early May. The "Mississippi Gulf Coast Marathon" started in 2016, with both full and half marathons running along the sand beach board walk and the closed off south side of Hwy 90, and is held over the first weekend of December. "Beauvoir Fall Muster" is held at the last home of the President of the Confederate States, Jefferson Davis, over looking the highway and the beach where historical civil war battles are re-enacted in the grounds. These are held during a weekend in late October or early November.

Every summer we have a festival to celebrate a seafood delicacy for which our island is famous. From the following choices can you identify which seafood this is? While you are deciding, watch you don't get nipped!

Answer: Lobster

Summerside, Prince Edward Island, is famous for its lobster. Every summer in July we have what is known as the Lobster Festival although until 2015 it was actually called the Lobster Carnival. There is a parade, a midway or show with all kinds of attractions and entertainments for both locals and visitors alike to enjoy. Many of the local restaurants put on their menu a special lobster dish of the week which can be anything from Lobster Mac and Cheese to Lobster Corn Dog. It is a foodie paradise for sure.

Once a year in the estuary town of Maldon a race takes place where competitors cross from one side of the Blackwater estuary to the other and back again. From the given answers can you decide what type of activity this is? I hope you don't get stuck on this question.

Answer: Mud race

The Maldon Mud Race began in 1973 after a bet between a local publican and a town resident. In 1974 the race attracted 20 participants who ran across the bed of the River Blackwater, drank a pint of Beer and then dashed back, a total distance of 500 meters. Over the years participants and spectators have increased and the drinking of a pint of beer ceased. Until 2010 the race was held in January but in 2010 the weather was so cold that it was postponed until the spring.

This new timing of the event was so popular that it has continued to be held either during the spring or summer months. Along with the race there is a festival atmosphere with side shows and entertainment and sometimes a fair and it has become a charity event. Submitted by Rubytops
4. In which specific Spanish fiesta do grown men dress as devils and jump over babies that have been placed in the street? The babies have all been born within the previous twelve months.

Answer: El Colacho

This is a traditional Spanish holiday in the province of Burgos. It is thought to date back to the 16OOs to celebrate Corpus Christi. Its origins are unclear but it is generally thought to have started as a fertility ritual. It is important to note that this fiesta is frowned upon by the Catholic authorities in Rome.

5. Chicago, the largest of the Midwest cities, has attracted many festivals of all types. Which annual music festival, that is now celebrated not only in Chicago but globally, was started by Perry Farrell of the group Jane's Addiction?

Answer: Lollapalooza

Lollapalooza was the name conceived by Perry Farrell of Jane's Addiction for the band's farewell tour in 1991. Following the success of the tour, Lollapalooza evolved into a single event taking place annually over a weekend during the summer months and held initially in Grant Park, Chicago. Over the years it has expanded to become one of the largest global Music Festivals with events being held across the United States, South America and Europe. Although originally the festival specialised in alternative music it now encompasses many other genres and offers fans some of the Music Industries biggest acts.

6. In which city does the Mardi Gras carnival season end on Fat Tuesday when the Krewe of Rex and Zulu Social Aid & Pleasure Club parades meet and then have a joint ball (Mistick Krewe of Comus) where the royal courts are unmasked at midnight?

Answer: New Orleans, Lousiana

All of the cities listed, as well as others on the northern gulf coast of the USA, have Mardi Gras parades and balls. These start about 6 weeks before Ash Wednesday, and are usually held on weekends. Many more Krewes hold their own balls and parades. One of the biggest held is in New Orleans with the Krewe of Rex and Zulu Social Aid and Pleasure Club parades being held on Fat Tuesday ending on Canal Street in the French Quarter.

Mardi Gras parades are known for their throws, so-called because people watching the parade yell/ask the riders of the floats to "throw me something mister, king, queen" or some other name. Throws may be doubloons, beads, candy, moon pies, stuffed animals, panties along with other items. The streets are quite a mess after the parade. One of the more unusual throws is that of coconuts by the Zulus. There are also marching clubs where you have to kiss a member to get a real and/or handmade flower. Most of the clubs and bars in the French Quarter do not allow people inside when the parades roll, but they do serve from the door in paper or plastic glasses.

7. Astir is looking forward to attending this annual festival of poetry, literature, music and the arts, where all performances are given in the Welsh language. which festival will she be going to in the first week of August?

Answer: National Eisteddfod

The Eisteddfod, although believed to date back to the 12th century, became an annual event during the 1860s. Now, for 8 days in August, the maes (festival site) is alive with performances and activities celebrating Welsh culture and traditions. The author of the best poem wins a chair which is probably a tradition from the earliest Eisteddfods where the author was allowed to sit in a chair at the local Lord's table to eat the celebration feast. Having a chair with a high back and arms was considered a magnificent possession in the days when most people sat on stools or on the floor.
8. In which area of the U.K. do the locals dress up old village wells and springs with elaborate flowered mosaics between the months of May and September?

Answer: The Peak District

The tradition of well dressing in the U.K. is mostly associated with the counties of Staffordshire and Derbyshire in the Peak District.
The origins of this custom are unclear but it is considered to have pagan roots. The dressing of wells would be made as an offering to the water gods as a thanksgiving for past supplies and as an inducement for further favours.

9. In 2018, Prince Edward Island celebrated the 50th anniversary of an annual festival held in honour of which humble vegetable more usually associated with the state of Idaho?

Answer: Potato

Prince Edward Island celebrated its first Potato Blossom Festival in 1968. It is held annually in July when the potato plants fill the fields across the island with their flowers. The Canadian Potato Museum, in the small town of O'Leary, houses one of the largest exhibits of potato artefacts in the world.
Although mostly associated with the state of Idaho, the potato originally originated in Peru and is the main cash crop of Prince Edward Island.

10. In my adopted State home of Colorado, annual festivals have been held honouring all but which one of the following? Your little buddy knows the answer.

Answer: Actor Bob Denver

"Frozen Dead Guys Day" is held every March in Nederland, Colorado. Fruita, Colorado celebrates "Mike the headless chicken Day" the third weekend in May. Mike lived for 18 months after being decapitated! Avon, Colorado held a festival honouring a local bridge named Bob as well as any person named Bob until 1997.
