Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the main fighter aircraft flown by the U.S. in World War I?

Answer: Spad XIII

The Spad XIII was a French built aircraft used by the U.S. in WWI, because America entered the war without an aircraft advanced enough for battle.
2. What US aircraft was the main successor to the F4F Wildcat?

Answer: F6F Hellcat

Introduced in the Second World War, the F6F Hellcat had a more powerful engine and was more fit to fight the Japanese.
3. What US plane was known as "The Last Gunfighter"?

Answer: F-8 Crusader

The F-8 Crusader came to be known as "The Last Gunfighter" because after that, missiles took over as the primary weapon. But (as manufacturers learned in Vietnam) missiles can't entirely replace guns.
4. How many heat-seeking AIM-9 Sidewinders did the US F-4 Phantom carry?

Answer: 4

The F-4 Phantom carried 4 AIM-9 Sidewinders, as well as 4 radar-guided AIM-7 Sparrows.
5. What was the size of the cannon on the US F-4E Phantom?

Answer: 20mm

The F-4E Phantom was a later model of the F-4 Phantom that carried a much needed gun.
6. During the 1967 Six Day War, what was the main Israeli fighter?

Answer: Mirage III

The Mirage III was a French-built fighter that was originally armed with only missiles, but the Israeli Air Force insisted on cannons, which were later added.
7. During the Gulf War in 1991, what was Iraq's most advanced fighter?

Answer: MiG-29

The MiG-29 was and still is a high-tech Russian-Soviet built fighter used by many different countries.
8. In 2005, which aircraft was at that time the most advanced fighter in the US Military?

Answer: F-22 Raptor

As at 2013, the F-22 Raptor remains the US's most advanced fighter. It is equipped with an afterburner engine and is almost invisible to radar, and may be one of the last manned fighters (not if I can help it!).
9. From what carrier did the F-4 Phantoms that scored both the first and last MiG kills of the Vietnam War come?

Answer: USS Midway

The USS Midway was refitted many times to adapt to new technology. Early in the Vietnam War, American F-4 Phantoms took off from the deck of Midway, and scored the first MiG kills of the war. In the closing days, Phantoms would score the last MiG kills.

In the early '90s, Midway couldn't be adapted to new technology, so the carrier that was in service since WWII, was decommissioned. Today there is a museum dedicated to the historic ship.
10. What was the first jet-powered fighter aircraft to enter service?

Answer: Me 262

The German Messerschmitt Me 262 came into service at the end of World War II (shortly before the UK's Gloster Meteor), and could fly at 100 mph faster than any other fighters in service at the time. It was originally going to be a fighter/bomber, although the design wasn't really ideal for that role. But when Hitler demanded something, he got it.
