Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Wool Hugh pee Mayan? (Remember, NO punctuation!)

Answer: will you be mine

I'm making a pictorial version of this using flair (buttons or badges). There are four pieces of flair with the following pictures:

A wool sweater
a portrait of Hugh Grant
a male dog with its leg lifted
a Mayan glyph
2. Aye whoosh hi cud gift ewe dumb whom man stores.

Answer: I wish I could give you the moon and stars

La lune et les etoiles, en francais.

Players: tell me how to write "the moon and stars" in other languages, and I will type your contributions in this box.

"Chand aur taare" means "moon and stars" in Hindi.
3. House a bowed ad eight? (NO punctuation!)

Answer: hows about a date

How's about this old song by Frankie Laine?

HEY GOOD LOOKIN, WHAT YOU GOT COOKIN?
HOW'S ABOUT COOKIN SOMETHING UP FOR ME?
HEY, SWEET BABY, DON'T YOU THINK MAYBE
WE COULD FIND US A BRAND NEW RECIPE?

I GOT A BRAND NEW CAR AND A TEN DOLLAR BILL
AND I KNOW A SPOT RIGHT OVER THE HILL.
THE JUKE BOX IS JUMPIN, THE DANCE IS FREE
SO IF YOU WANNA HAVE FUN, COME ALONG WITH ME!

HEY GOOD LOOKIN, WHAT YOU GOT COOKING?
HOW'S ABOUT COOKING SOMETHIN UP FOR ME?

I'M FREE AND READY, SO WE CAN GO STEADY
HOW'S ABOUT SAVIN ALL YOUR TIME FOR ME?
NO MORE LOOKIN, I KNOW I'VE BEEN COOKIN
HOW'S ABOUT KEEPIN STEADY COMPANY?

I'M GONNA TOSS MY DATE BOOK OVER THE FENCE
AND FIND ME ONE FOR FIVE OR TEN CENTS
I'LL KEEP IT TIL IT'S COVERED WITH AGE
'COS I'M WRITIN YOUR NAME DOWN IN EVERY PAGE!

and so on....
4. Lutz coast Eddie (Uh uh, no punctuation.)

Answer: lets go steady

A lutz is a figure skating move.

I am just about old enough to have "gone steady" with somebody, but I don't believe anyone ever asked me to, in those words.

Can anyone think of other, more modern ways to say it? Like maybe, "Let's hang out"? Hooking up is, I think, a whole different ballgame. Speaking of which, remember "getting to first base," and so on? How about "petting" or "heavy petting"? I'm not quite old enough to have done that--I think it was a 1950s thing, no?
5. Owl loaf hew four heifer [NO punctuation, remember?]

Answer: Ill love you forever

This does not always turn out to be true. I've told this to one or two people whom I don't love at this point in time. However, I do still love some of my exes (none of whom live in Texas).
6. Hugh half stow lint mahi art

Answer: you have stolen my heart

However, when I fall in love it doesn't feel like my heart has been stolen--it feels more like it's overstimulated.
7. Awl nipper leaf few [No, no, NO punctuation!]

Answer: Ill never leave you

When my love and I go on trips separate from each other, the one who's staying home says "Bandon, bandon, bandon!" in an accusatory tone. Maybe that's TMI?
8. Beam I felon thyme

Answer: be my valentine

For this was on Seynt Valentynes day,
Whan every foul cometh ther to chese his make,
Of every kinde, that men thynke may;
And that so huge a noyse gan they make,
That erthe and see, and tree, and every lake
So ful was, that unnethe was ther space
For me to stonde, so ful was al the place.

from The Parliament of Fowls (Birds) by Geoffrey Chaucer
(This is reportedly the first time St. Valentine's Day was connected with love and lovers.)
9. Meg Swede loaf Twomey

Answer: make sweet love to me

"Making love" didn't always mean what it usually means today. In the past to make love was to simply flirt or talk of love to another person.

Twomey (pronounced TOO-me) is an Irish surname. Linda Twomey was one of my best childhood friends.
10. Two half fend too old frump sis Dei four whirred

Answer: to have and to hold from this day forward

Moi, Pierre, je te prend, Suzette,
pour être mon épouse,
pour avoir et tenir de ce jour vers l'avant....
11. Fur bed her fore wars

Answer: for better for worse

pour meilleur ou pour le pire....
12. Far ridge her fur pour Hur

Answer: for richer for poorer

pour la prospérité et la pauvreté....
13. Him zig nest hand din elf

Answer: in sickness and in health

dans la maladie et dans la santé....
14. Tool loaf fan two chair itch

Answer: to love and to cherish

pour aimer et chérir....
15. Has lung Gus oui boat shul lift [Pronounce "oui" as the French do.]

Answer: as long as we both shall live

jusqu'à la mort nous sépare.
(until death separates us)
