Although Queen Victoria had Christmas trees in her childhood, Prince Albert revived the tradition for his family. It was not until the Illustrated London News published an engraving of the Royal Family gathered around a Christmas tree in December 1848 that the general public began to adopt the custom.

The generous Prince Albert also presented large numbers of trees to schools and Army barracks at Christmas.
