1. What was George Dallas's middle name?

Answer: Mifflin

Born July 10, 1792, George Dallas was given the middle name of Mifflin. He was named after Thomas Mifflin, a family friend who was governor of Pennsylvania at the time of George Dallas' birth.

Answer: Princeton

Dallas graduated from Princeton in 1810 as class valedictorian.

Dallas married Sophia Chew Nicklin in 1817. Nicklin was the daughter of a local businessman. They were married for almost 50 years before George Dallas died in 1864.

Dallas first supported Calhoun for president but, when it became apparent that Calhoun's effort was collapsing, he switched his support to Jackson late. Wilkins was married to Dallas's sister Mathilda in 1818. Dallas served in the U.S. Senate from 1831 to 1833. Wilkins served from 1831 to 1834, when he resigned to become U.S. Minister to Russia. Wilkins died in 1865 and is buried in Pittsburgh.

In a close general election, Polk and Dallas defeated Clay and Frelinghuysen 170-105 in the electoral college to win.

In the last years, Dallas remained a Democrat, voting for George McClellan against Abraham Lincoln in 1864. Dallas suffered a heart attack and died December 31, 1864.
