Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. As a commander in the Virginia militia during the French - Indian War, Washington never won a battle.

Answer: True

Scary but true. Washington was involved in the surrender of Fort Necessity in July 1754 and with the defeat and death of General Edward Braddock in 1755. Washington was best known for his brillant retreats and was promoted several times. (I am not kidding.)
2. George Washington was a third cousin twice removed of what famous Civil War General?

Answer: Robert E. Lee

Yes, the infamous Confederate General who surrendered to General Grant during the Civil War was a Washington relative.
3. Washington was the ONLY U.S. president to be born a British citizen.

Answer: False

In fact, all the first seven US presidents were "British" citizens, as was the ninth (William Henry Harrison). Martin Van Buren (No 8) was the first president to be born as an American Citizen, having been born in 1782.

Washington was born in Westmoreland County, Virginia at 10am on February 22, 1732.

Although the constitution ruled that to be US President you had to be born in the country, an exemption was made for existing citizens. Washington, and seven of his successors, was a "British" citizen at the time of his birth.
4. What size shoe did George Washington have?

Answer: 13

George Washington was a huge man for his day standing over 6 feet 2 inches and weighing over 200 pounds.
5. George Washington, one of the 'founding fathers' of the United States, fathered no children himself.

Answer: True

Yes, it's true. George and Martha Washington had no children of their own, although they raised two of her children from a previous marriage. It has been speculated that he had been rendered sterile by a bout of smallpox, and thus unable to father children himself, but there is no concrete evidence of this.
6. Washington disapproved of what famous incident that helped cause the Revolutionary War?

Answer: Boston Tea Party

Washington disagreed with this action while he was a member of the House of Burgesses in 1773. He was against the tax but thought this action sent the wrong message to King George III.
7. How many of the 69 electors voted against Washington in his first election for president?

Answer: 0

Washington carried all 10 states (North Carolina and Rhode Island had not yet ratified the Constitution so they could not vote). John Adams was elected vice-president because he had gotten 34 votes.
8. In his second election Washington carried the vote of all 132 electors and all 15 states.

Answer: True

In both terms not one elector ever voted against his candidacy.
9. George Washington had wooden teeth.

Answer: false

Washington had one tooth when he was elected president but he never had false teeth made of wood. He had them fashioned out of lead, ivory, cow's teeth, and other human teeth, but never wood.
10. Finally the cherry tree story. Did Washington really chop down a cherry tree and tell his folks "I cannot tell a lie"?

Answer: no

Sorry, this was probably the first urban legend. This story was wholly from the imagination of Parson Weems.
