Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Bobbing for Apples. What could be more fun than a mess of kids, and a tub of water filled with apples? The idea being to stick your head in the water and pull out an apple with your teeth. Except in 2010 the town of Manchester, UK, banned it. Sort of. You can still have the kids, water, and apples. How were you supposed to get an apple out?

Answer: Chopsticks

The kids suppose to use chopsticks to get their apple out. A couple of Doctors complained of possible eye damage and the spread of germs in biblical proportions by everyone using the water, so the good town council, trembling with fear over the possibility of dead kids all over town decided to stop this unhealthy practice. Chopsticks would be issued, and the kids would somehow have to fish them out, which sounds much more difficult than using your teeth. Way to kill a 2,000 year old tradition, Manchester!

2. On 0ctober 31, 2005, the renowned pumpkin carver Scott Cully set a record in North Cambria, Pennsylvania, USA for the world's largest carved jack o'lantern. How devilishly large was it?

Answer: 1,469 lbs (666.33 kg)

In 2010, Scott Cullly set yet another record carving a pumpkin weighing a whopping 1,810.5 lbs (821.23 kg).

While modern jack o'lanterns are most closely associated with pumpkins, other fruits and vegetables have been carved over the centuries, including gourds, turnips, and mangelwurzels. A mangelwurzel is a root vegetable also known as a mangel beet. A "mangled" vegetable would seem appropriate for a night when zombies, vampires and goblins roam.

Did you get the hint? How devilishly large? Sign of the beast: 666

3. Halitophobia is the fear of bad breath, Siderodromophobia is the fear of trains or railroads. What is the fear of Halloween called?

Answer: Samhainophobia

Samhainophobia - Fear of Halloween, witch (pun intended) finds its roots in the old Celtic festival of Samhain. Sanguivoriphobia - fear of vampires (close); Scriptophobia - fear of writing; Methyphobia - fear of alcohol (Really? How ghastly)

4. You don't want your dear old deceased grandmother to become a zombie do you? (OK, maybe the evil mother-in-law...) If you lived in Haiti, how would you ensure this not happening?

Answer: Stab the corpse through the heart

Stab the old biddy through the heart. This will keep her from turning into an annoying zombie and chasing you all over the island. It will make sure she is really dead, and not the property of a Bokor. (Bokors in Voodoo are sorcerers, mambo (priestesses) or houngan (priests).

Other ways to make sure Granny stays in the box are to bury the corpse face down, (so that a Bokor can't call them) or even give the recently departed a weapon to defend themselves. Placing flowers on the grave is nice, and I don't know if a silver cross would protect you (I thought that was for vampires), and it would be interesting to see Rick Grimes and crew (from the TV series "The Walking Dead") handle the Haitian Zombie problem.

5. On a Tuesday, Halloween night in 1967, Robert Matthew Van Winkle was born in Dallas, Texas. Do you know his strange but more common name?

Answer: Vanilla Ice

He was given the name "Vanilla" while on a breakdancing team as he was the only one in the group that was not African American. After initial success as a rapper, he disappeared from the charts but re-emerged on his own show - "The Vanilla Ice Project" - in 2009.

Babies born on October 31st are reputedly able to see and talk to ghosts. Boo!

6. In the Agatha Christie Novel "Hallowe'en Party", a young girl, Joyce, claims to have witnessed a murder. What became of Joyce shortly after this?

Answer: She was drowned in the apple-bobbing tub

Joyce was regarded as an attention-seeker by most of the protagonists. It turned out that her friend Miranda had been a witness to an earlier murder, but that Joyce had claimed the story, not realising she was in the hearing of the murderers, signing her death warrant. Who knew bobbing for apples could be so deadly?

7. Neighbors thought it was just another Halloween prank in October 2014, when Derek Ward dragged what looked like a decapitated body into the street in Long Island, New York. Imagine their horror when they found out it was his mother's lifeless body! What became of Derek?

Answer: Killed himself by stepping in front of a train

Derek suffered from mental illness. Tragically, his mother had an appointment with a psychiatrist scheduled two days after her murder to get her son the medication that may have saved her life.

8. In 1974, Ronald Clark O'Bryan from Texas, otherwise known as the "The Man Who Killed Halloween" and "The Candy Man", decided to lace some candy with poison and hand them out on Halloween. Who did he succeed in killing?

Answer: His son, Timothy

His own son, 8 year old Timothy O'Bryan. Ronald had a problem. He was deep in debt. So he hatched this not so brilliant plan to add cyanide to some Pixy Stix (candy filled straws, basically) and hand them out on Halloween to his son and daughter and some of their friends. The idea being to collect the insurance on his son and daughter, and blame it on strangers handing out poisoned candy to kids. What could possibly go wrong?

The son ate his, and became violently sick, and died before reaching the hospital. His daughter Elizabeth did not eat hers, nor did the other kids. Dad identified one house to the police as the place where the candy was handed out, but the problem was the owner was at work that night with a rock solid alibi. His second mistake was to try to collect a life insurance policy on his son that he had just bought on October 3rd. Bragging about how he would soon come in to money before all this happened did not help him any. He was convicted of murder and met the Grim Reaper on March 31, 1984, by lethal injection.

9. The Folks in Manitou Springs, Colorado, have a ghoulish way of celebrating the Halloween season. What sort of event do they have in late October, that brings in people wearing all sort of costumes from all over? It's not NASCAR but looks hellishly fun!

Answer: Coffin Races

Coffin Races. Yep that's right. Folks come from all over to participate. You build, buy or rent a coffin, or use your idea of one. Add wheels of some kind. Anything goes apparently. One person must be IN the coffin, while the rest of the costumed team pushes it to the finish line. Before the race you get to join the coffin parade. Google Emma Crawford Coffin Races for some frightful good images!

Which brings up the question: Who was Emma? When she shuffled off this mortal coil, she was buried on the top of Red Mountain. After years of stormy weather the coffin was flushed out of the ground and pieces of it and some bones were found at the bottom of said mountain. They re-buried her ( what pieces they could find) in an unmarked grave. She now has a nice Memorial stone marker
in town. The Emma Crawford Festival is the town's way to honor her....

Not to be outdone with the Coffin Race, they also have a yearly wake for poor Emma. You can see "her" laid out in a coffin, in the parlour. For $50 dollars you also get drinks and buffet dinner in a 20 minute event, that sells out every year. I wonder how Emma gets her cut?

10. Vladimir Ilyitch Leninīs embalmed body lies in the mausoleum in Red Square in Moscow. But he was not always alone in his tomb. Since 1953 another dead comrade shared a place next to him until October 31, 1961, when he was removed. Who was this scary evil character?

Answer: Stalin

Joseph Stalin was a megalomaniac and no-one dared to reject his shameless demand to lie next to someone who was considered the greatest man of the 1917 Revolution. Removing his body was a part of a process called De-Stalinization, which involved improved prison conditions, re-naming buildings and places (the city of Stalingrad became Volgograd again),or destruction of Stalinīs monuments. Lenin is still in his Mausoleum, and Stalin is buried in the Kremlin Wall Necropolis. Krushchev and Molotov were Soviet politicians, Mao Zedong was leader of China.
