Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Harry Potter's name in the Italian version of the books remains the same.

Answer: True

I think his name remains the same in all translations, although I could be wrong.
2. In the Italian version of Harry Potter, Professor Snape is called Severus what?

Answer: Piton

Pitone is the Italian word for Python, and the translator wanted to convey Snape's rather snakelike qualities.
3. In the Italian translations of the Harry Potter books, who is Professor Sprite?

Answer: Professor Sprout

Sprout wouldn't have made much sense to an Italian reader.
4. What do Italian Harry Potter fans call Fang?

Answer: Thor

Zanna means Fang, but the name wasn't considered suitable.
5. Madama Bumb is the Italian name of which Hogwarts teacher?

Answer: Madam Hooch

In case you'd like to know, Madam Pomfrey is called Madama Chips.
6. Which Hogwarts school house is called Tassorosso in the Italian version of the books?

Answer: Hufflepuff

It wasn't easy to translate the House names! Each of them is identified by a color.
7. And Tassorosso means red what in the Italian version of "Harry Potter"?

Answer: Badger

Gryffindor is Grifondoro, Slytherin is Serpeverde (green serpent). For the translation of Ravenclaw see next question.
Also, I know that there is more than one way to spell griffin.
8. A slight problem was posed by the change of translator (into Italian) after 'Chamber of Secrets'. The new translator changed the name of Ravenclaw from Corvonero to what?

Answer: Pecoranera

Corvonero means black raven/crow, and in my opinion is a much more dignified name for Ravenclaw than Pecoranera, which means black sheep and sounds rather...unRavenclawish! Aquila means eagle, bronzo is bronze. It was a rather big error for her to change the name, and in the 4th and 5th book they changed it back to Corvonero.
9. Professor Allock is the Italian name of which Hogwarts teacher?

Answer: Professor Lockhart

Allock is a play on words: an allocco is a tawny owl but it's also slang for a fool or an idiot.
10. What is Tom Riddle's middle name in the Italian version of the Harry Potter books?

Answer: Orvoloson

Tom Orvoloson Riddle can be rearranged to spell "Sono io Lord Voldemort" which, naturally, means "I am Lord Voldemort".
11. What are sickles called for Italian Harry Potter fans?

Answer: Falci

Zellini are knuts, while galleons were translated as galeoni.
12. How is "Parseltongue" translated in the Italian version of Harry Potter?

Answer: Rettilofono

Somehow it just doesn't sound the same....oh, well!
13. The Womping Willow not only has a different name in the Italian version of the Harry Potter books (Platano Picchiatore), but is a different tree! Platano means--

Answer: Sycamore

Picchiare means to hit or to beat up someone (or something).
14. What do Italian Harry Potter fans read instead of S.P.E.W.?

Answer: C.R.E.P.A.

C.R.E.P.A-which incidentally means to die!-stands for "Comitato per la Riabilitazione degli Elfi Poveri e Abbruttiti", which, roughly translated, neans Committee for the Rehabilitaion of Empoverished and Brutalized Elves...
15. Which of these characters' names remains the same in the Italian version of the Harry Potter books?

Answer: Gregory Goyle

Filch becomes Gazza (Magpie), Crabbe is Tiger (who knows why...) and Mrs. Norris is...Mrs. Purr!
