Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I have some photos of the Neue Flora Theater. This theatre was built for 'Phantom of the Opera' which was produced by Stella. Do you know what city I took this photo in?

Answer: Hamburg

The theatre is unlike others I have ever been in. It's very modern and has a huge stage. After 'Phantom' closed, the theatre was home to the musical 'Mozart.'
2. There's a photo of me standing next to this statue that has a donkey, dog, cat and rooster. I remember that it's from some sort of fairy-tale, but I can't remember what city this fairy-tale was set in. Can you?

Answer: Bremen

The fairy-tale is the 'Die Bremer Stadt Musikanten.'
3. On the small subway in this city, I would get off at a stop named 'Dom, Hauptbahnhof.' After getting out of the train station, there was a beautiful cathedral which was one of the few buildings which remained after the city was bombed in World War II. The cathedral overlooks the Rhine River.

Answer: Cologne

The cathedral, called the Kolner Dom, is a beautiful building with gorgeous mosaics onthe floor. It survived the destruction of Cologne largely unscathed.
4. The next photo is of what is called the 'Festival Theatre.' You can see me in the photo standing on a red carpet. Off to the left side in the background you can make out the Mediterranean Sea. I think there are impressions of hands in concrete tiles which go around the front of the theatre.

Answer: Cannes

Home of the Cannes Film Festival, the Festival Theatre stands next to the sea. There are hand impressions of many famous people including Michael Douglas, Angelica Houston and Meryl Streep which go around part of the building and in the small park adjacent to the theatre.
5. I'm trying to think of which German state I'm in for this photo. I'm standing in front of a castle called Schloss Neuschwanstein. Mad King Ludwig built it in the 19th century, but only lived there are short time after its completion before he was declared insane and drowned. What German state is this castle in?

Answer: Bavaria

The castle is beautiful and built on a high hill that visitors must climb in order to view. There is a yellow castle which is not on the hill nearby, that is the one in which Ludwig grew up.
6. I love Mozart so could not pass up the opportunity to see 'Mozarts Gerburtshaus.' However, I have no clue which city this was in!

Answer: Salzburg

His Gerburtshaus is actually right next to where my exchange student's father works. Across the river is Mozarts Wohnhaus, where he grew up.
7. I have never eaten ice cream like this. At Tichy, you can order things like 'spaghetti' (vanilla ice cream with strawberry sauce). Tichy is in the city that has the famous 'big wheel' in which you can see the entire city.

Answer: Vienna

I have seriously never had such good ice cream. Tichy is not in the main part of the city, but is still on the subway system. People from all over, when they come to Vienna, go get some ice cream at Tichy. I think the subway stop at Tichy is the one where I saw the largest vending machine I have ever seen (it took up an entire wall and carried things like dog food and tv dinners).
8. After having gone up the Hafelekar Mountain, I was able to take some beautiful photos of the surrounding area. I was surprised to be so high up that in the middle of July, there was snow on the mountain! I don't know how people can ski the mountain in the winter, but people do by taking cable cars up to the ski area. Please help me name the city that I have the photos of!

Answer: Innsbruck

On one side of the mountain you can see Innsbruck and on the other side there is nothing but mountains. It's a beautiful (and scary!) view.
9. Schloss Hellbrunn must be one of the most fun castles to be in. I didn't get a chance to go inside, but on the outside there is a table where water squirts up from the chairs and gets the guests wet! What city is this castle in so I can visit it again?

Answer: Salzburg

The castle was made for one of the archbishops. For the water table, the guests were not allowed to stand up before the archbishop. So he would have fun and get the guests very wet and make them uncomfortable before allowing them to get up. This castle is amazing, there are hidden water streams everywhere which were (and still are!) used to soak the guests.
10. The Mirabell Palace was turned into a library in this Austrian city.

Answer: Salzburg

There are beautiful angels lining one marble staircase which is used for all of the photos of the wedding couples. People come from all over the world (especially Japan) to be married here.
