Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Alberto Fujimori was the President of which country from 1990-2000?

Answer: Peru

2. Mahmud Celal Bayar was the President of Turkey from 1950 to ____.

Answer: 1960

Mahmud Celal Bayar was also the Prime Minister of Turkey between 1937 and 1939. After World War II, he resigned from the Republican Party and helped found the Democratic Party in 1946. In 1950, he was elected President of Turkey. However, in 1960 he was ousted in a 'coup d'etat' by military officers (as well as central Democratic members)and tried and sentenced to death on charges of corruption and abuse of power in 1961, but his sentence was reduced to life in prison.

In 1964, he was released with other political prisoners in a general amnesty (pardon).
3. Ho Chi Minh (1890-1969) was the first President of the Democratic Republic of which country?

Answer: Vietnam

Many of his personal qualities (such as integrity and determination) brought him admiration in Vietnam as well as around the world. However, there is wide disagreement about his character and accomplishments. To some, he was (and still is) a patriotic figure who used the Communist doctrine and strategy as a means of freeing his people, but whose basic instincts were democratic and humanitarian. To others, he was a scheming revolutionary who pretended to be well meaning and concerned about the welfare of people in order to manipulate enemies and rivals and set the stage for the creation of a totalitarian regime.

There is still wide controversy over him in Vietnam today.
