Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Opened in 1610, a favourite watering hole of Scotland's national poet, Rabbie Burns

Answer: Globe Inn, Dumfries

Situated on Dumfries High Street, the Globe Inn was a favourite drinking place of Robert Burns during the 1790s. The pub contains a fair amount of memorabilia dedicated to the man.
2. Made famous in the 1983 film "Local Hero"

Answer: Pennan Inn, Aberdeenshire

Pennan is a small village on the Moray firth coast of Aberdeenshire. The 1983 film "Local Hero", starring Burt Lancaster, was filmed in and around the village. The pub contains a plaque commemorating the film.
3. Opened in 1360, claims to be the oldest pub in Scotland

Answer: Sheep Heid Inn, Edinburgh

There are probably quite a few pubs claiming to be the oldest in Scotland, but the Sheep Heid, located in The Causeway, Edinburgh, must have a better claim than most. Opened in 1360, the pub's regulars had a surprise in July, 2016, when Queen Elizabeth II dropped in for a bar lunch, completely unannounced.
4. Has sign saying "No Hawkers or Campbells"

Answer: Clachaig Inn, Glen Coe

Glen Coe was the site, in 1692, of an infamous massacre of the MacDonald clan by the rival Campbells. The original Clachaig Inn pre-dated the massacre, but was later moved further west.
5. Has reputedly, at 104 ft, the longest bar in the United Kingdom

Answer: Horse Shoe Bar, Glasgow

The Horse Shoe Bar is located on Drury Street in Glasgow city centre. The bar measures up at a whopping 104 ft 3 in. Roy Rogers and Trigger are reputed to have ridden around the bar during a visit to the city in the 1950s.
6. Favourite watering hole of Inspector John Rebus

Answer: Oxford Bar, Edinburgh

Inspector Rebus is the creation of novelist Ian Rankin. An Edinburgh detective, he spends much of his time off-duty in the Oxford Bar. Whilst Rebus may be entirely fictional, the Oxford Bar really does exist. It is located in Young Street in the city's New Town.
7. Situated near the northern tip of Loch Lomond

Answer: Drovers Inn, Inverarnan

The Drovers Inn opened in 1705, and is situated on the A82, a busy tourist route that links Glasgow with Inverness, via the banks of Loch Lomond. A drover was a highland cattle herder who drove his cattle south past Loch Lomond to market in Glasgow.
8. Named after the ship of "Whisky Galore" fame

Answer: Am Politician, Eriskay

"Whisky Galore" was a 1949 film based on the real-life events of 1941, when a ship named the SS Politician (renamed the SS Cabinet Minister in the film), carrying crates of whisky from Liverpool to Jamaica, was wrecked off the island of Eriskay. Islanders gleefully salvaged the cargo.
The pub has a bottle of whisky from the ship on display. ("Am" is the gaelic for "the".)
9. Inspiration for Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde

Answer: Deacon Brodie's, Edinburgh

Deacon Brodie's Tavern is located on Edinburgh's famous Royal Mile. It is named after a real person called William Brodie who was a guild Deacon and city Councillor by day, and a burglar by night. Hanged in public in 1788, he was the inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson's novel "The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde".
10. Remotest pub on mainland Britain

Answer: Old Forge, Knoydart

Knoydart is a peninsula in northwest Scotland which is not located to the national road network. If you want to visit the Old Forge, in the small community of Inverie, you will need to travel seven miles by ferry from Mallaig (it only sails twice a day), or hike 18 miles through a mountain pass.
