After being refused permission by her father to attend Wellesley College, Rose enrolled at the Manhattanville College of the Sacred Heart. She finished her studies at the convent school Kasteel Bloemendal in Vaals, The Netherlands.

She married Joseph P. Kennedy and they had 9 children together. Jack was the second boy born to them.

4. Jack almost died as a child. To which disease did he nearly lose his life?

Answer: Scarlet Fever

On February 20, 1920 when Jack was not yet three years old, he became sick with scarlet fever, a contagious and often fatal disease. Joe was terrified that little Jack would die. He made phone calls all over Massachusetts to get Jack into the city hospital in Boston, which no one who lived outside the city limits (the Kennedy's lived in Brookline) had ever been checked into before. Joe was at the hospital every day to be by his son's side.

A month later, Jack took a turn for the better and recovered.
5. What school did the Kennedy brothers attend because their father wanted them to be able to move in better social circles?

Answer: The Choate School

Joe knew that their Irish Catholic background would lead to prejudice against his sons later in life. Therefore, Joe sent his sons to Choate, a Protestant school where the finest families in New England also sent their sons. The friends Jack made at Choate would be useful to him later in his political career.

The Kennedy sisters attended Catholic convent schools so they could grow to be proper Catholic wives and mothers.

Answer: Why England Slept

Jack wrote "Appeasement In Munich" after going on a fact finding tour across Europe while he was working in London for his father who was the US Ambassador there. Since his father was one of the architects of the appeasement accord at Munich, Jack meant to keep the thesis quiet. However, Joe Sr. convinced him to publish it. It was published under its new name: "Why England Slept".
8. What were the call letters and numbers of the Motor Torpedo Boat on which Jack was a lieutenant that sank when it was rammed by the Japanese Destroyer Amagiri and sliced in half?

Answer: PT 109

Jack was on PT 109 when it sank in the Pacific after being rammed by the Japanese Destroyer Amagiri and sliced in half. For his bravery Jack received the Navy and Marine Corps Medal. His military citation read as follows: 'For extremely heroic conduct as Commanding Officer of Motor Torpedo Boat 109 following the collision and sinking of that vessel in the Pacific War Theater on August 1-2, 1943. Unmindful of personal danger, Lieutenant Kennedy unhesitatingly braved the difficulties and hazards of darkness to direct rescue operations, swimming many hours to secure aid and food after he had succeeded in getting his crew ashore.

His outstanding courage, endurance and leadership contributed to the saving of several lives and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.'
9. Which of these four awards did Jack NOT receive while serving in World War II?

Jack was considered a fine officer and won the Purple Heart, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. His former Navy buddies were some of his strongest supporters during his political years.
10. Jack was his sister Kathleen's biggest supporter. What did she do during the war that required Jack and Joe Jr. to stand against their mother to support Kathleen?

Answer: She married Billy Cavendish.

Against her parents wishes, especially her mother's, Kathleen married William Cavendish, Marquess of Hartington, whom she affectionately called Billy. Billy would have been the Duke of Devonshire had he not been killed in World War II. Jack and Joe Jr., though a bit shocked, supported Kathleen against their mother. Joe Jr. was even the Supporter, which is the American equivalent of a Best Man, at their wedding.
11. What event changed Jack's life and set his political career in motion?

Answer: Joe Jr. dying during the war

Joe Jr. dying during the war gave Jack's political career a jump start. Since Joe died, Jack felt that it was his responsibility to take up his family's political ambitions and run with them.
12. Who vacated the Massachusetts 9th District seat in the US House of Representatives, which Jack ran to fill, and won, in 1946?

Answer: James Michael Curley

When in 1946 U.S. Representative James Michael Curley vacated his seat in an overwhelmingly Democratic district to become mayor of Boston, Jack ran for the seat, beating his Republican opponent by a large margin. He was a congressman for six years but had a mixed voting record, often straying from President Harry S. Truman and the rest of the Democratic Party.

It was the same district in which his grandfather, John "Honey Fitz" Fitzgerald, had run.
13. What Massachusetts political powerhouse did Jack defeat for a seat in the US Senate in 1952?

Answer: Henry Cabot Lodge

In the fall of 1952, Lodge found himself fighting in a tight race for re-election with John F. Kennedy, then a Congressman from Massachusetts. Due to his efforts in helping Eisenhower, Lodge had neglected his own Senate campaign. In addition, some of Taft's supporters in Massachusetts were angered when Lodge supported Eisenhower, and they defected to Kennedy's campaign.

In November 1952 Lodge was narrowly defeated by Kennedy. Lodge received 48.5% of the vote to Kennedy's 51.5%.
14. On September 12, 1953, Jack married Jacqueline Lee Bouvier, whom he called "Jackie". True or False: "Black Jack" Bouvier was Jackie's father.

Answer: True

John Vernou Bouvier III, aka "Black Jack" Bouvier, was an American socialite and Wall Street stockbroker. His nickname was "Black Jack", referring to his dark tan and his flamboyant lifestyle. Bouvier served in World War I and after became a stockbroker.

He married Janet Norton Lee, on July 7, 1928. John and Janet had two daughters, Jacqueline and Lee. His drinking, gambling and womanizing led to his divorce from his wife in 1940. His former wife reportedly did not want him to escort Jacqueline down the aisle for her wedding to John F. Kennedy. Jacqueline was instead escorted by her stepfather.

Some reports state that Bouvier was too intoxicated to escort his daughter, and this was the reason Jackie's step father, Hugh D. Auchincloss, stepped in to give the bride away.
15. Because of his Addison's Disease, how many times was Jack given Last Rites by a priest?

Answer: 4

Jack was actually given the Catholic last rites at least 5 times in his life. Jack had both Scarlet Fever and and what was then believed to be leukemia. However, it was his Addison's disease, a disease of immune deficiency, that made it difficult for doctors to even attempt to repair Jack's back injuries, as there was a chance that he could get a massive infection.

He did get infections several times over the years.
