Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which First Lady was the first to live in the White House?

Answer: Abigail Adams

Martha Jefferson died before her husband became President, Louisa Adams was the wife of John Quincy Adams and the only First Lady to be born outside of the U.S. When the capital moved to Washington in 1800 the city was a wilderness. Upon moving to the new mansion Abigail thought the location to be beautiful but lamented at the difficulty of finding someone to haul firewood from the woods. Good help was hard to find even for a First Lady!
2. Who was the first wife to witness her husband's swearing in as president?

Answer: Dolley Madison

Martha Washington, who was not in favor of her husband's presidency, stayed at home preparing for the move while George traveled to New York City for his inauguration. Abigail Adams also remained with her family and later joined her husband. Years later, Mary Todd Lincoln was present when her husband was sworn in.
3. In 1962 Jacqueline Kennedy hosted the first televised tour of the White House.

Answer: False

Shortly after moving into the White House, President Truman noticed the telltale signs of a building in disrepair! In 1948 the Trumans moved across the street to Blair House for three years while the White House underwent a complete interior demolition.

The complete reconstruction kept only the exterior walls of the Executive Mansion. On May 3, 1952, President Truman conducted a televised tour of the "new" White House. A decade later, on February 14, 1962, First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy presented her White House restoration to the world.

The restoration was Mrs. Kennedy's premiere project as First Lady. The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences awarded Jackie an honorary Emmy for her program and the award was accepted on her behalf by Ladybird Johnson.
4. Who was the first wife of a president to wear pants in public?

Answer: Patricia Nixon

Jackie Kennedy, Eleanor Roosevelt and Lady Bird Johnson all wore pants on informal occasions such as horse riding. It wasn't until 1972 that Pat Nixon appeared in a formal magazine picture proudly donning what was formerly thought of as strictly menswear.
5. Shy, awkward and withdrawn as a child, who established herself as an involved and relevant First Lady and was the first to hold press conferences?

Answer: Eleanor Roosevelt

She also wrote a daily newspaper column, a monthly magazine column and hosted a weekly radio show. Eleanor also refused Secret Service protection and had her own personal pistol (and permit, of course!).
6. Which First Lady was the first to have electricity installed in the White House?

Answer: Caroline Harrrison

Caroline lobbied for funds to modernize and expand the White House, and it was through her efforts that electricity was installed and the plumbing updated. She also established the tradition of having a decorative Christmas tree at the White House.
7. Suffering from a stroke two years before her husband became president, who was the first wife of a president to die in the White House?

Answer: Letitia Tyler

She spent her entire time as first lady in a semi-invalid state, attending only one official public function, her daughter Elizabeth's 1842 White House wedding. She passed away in September 1842. Her funeral was held in the East Room, and she was buried in a cemetery on the Virginia plantation where she was born.
8. Who was the first woman to be both a president's wife and the mother of a president?

Answer: Abigail Adams

Abigail Adams was the wife of John Adams, the second president and mother of John Quincy Adams, the sixth president. Barbara Bush was the second First Lady to be wife and mother of presidents.
9. Who was the first wife to ride with her husband in his Inauguration Parade?

Answer: Helen "Nellie" Taft

Her interest in politics involved opposing prohibition, and promoting women's suffrage and rights for factory workers.
10. Which First Lady was the first to vote?

Answer: Florence Harding

Women's suffrage passed just three months before Mr. Harding was elected President. Presumably, his wife's vote was a sure thing!
