Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these people was *not* a founder of a company that would become a part of Lockheed Martin?

Answer: Gustave Lockheed

Martin created and flew his own style of 'flying machine' in 1909. The Loughead brothers did the same in 1913. Martin and the Lougheads soon forged their own aircraft companies, setting up shops in California.
2. With whose company did Martin first merge his company in 1916?

Answer: The Wright Brothers

In 1916, the Glenn L. Martin Company merged with the Wright Company to form the Wright-Martin Aircraft Company. (Douglas and McDonnell were engineers who had worked for Martin since 1912. Hughes was only a 11 at the time.) In 1917, he pulled out of that merger and reformed the Glenn L. Martin Co. in Ohio.
3. What was the first twin engine bomber?

Answer: MB-2

Built by Martin in 1918.
4. The Loughead Aircraft Manufacturing Co. sold what as its first military sale?

Answer: Flying boats

In 1918, Loughead makes its first military sale -- of Curtiss HS-2L flying boats -- to the U.S. Navy.
5. When did Lougheed become Lockheed?

Answer: 1926

After the demise of the original company, Allan Lougheed officially forms the Lockheed Aircraft Company. The name is spelled phonetically to alleviate earlier problems with pronunciation.
6. Who made the first solo flight around the world, in a Lockheed Vega?

Answer: Wiley Post

in 1933, Post made the flight in a record 7 days, 19 hours in his Vega, named 'Winnie Mae'. Hughes made a round-the-world trip in 1938 in a Lockheed Model 14 Super Electra in 3 days, 19 hours, and 14 minutes.
7. A Martin-made plane was the first to shoot down a Nazi aircraft.

Answer: False

It was a Lockheed P-38 multi-engine fighter that shot down a Nazi plane in 1937. Lockheed would produce nearly 10,000 of the planes, named 'Lightning,' which were recognized as one of the great fighters of World War II.
8. The Martin B-26 bomber, first made in 1940, has what distinction?

Answer: best survivability rate

More than 5,200 were produced.
9. 1943: Lockheed's development team code-named 'Skunk Works' works on what secret project?

Answer: 1st American jet fighter

Lockheed's XP-80 Shooting Star flies for the first time in 1944. It sets a new world air speed record in 1947 of 623.8 MPH.
10. 1949: The Martin Navy Viking research rocket sets a record for high altitude research at White Sands, New Mexico. How high did it go?

Answer: 158 miles

Answer: 1955

12. 1958: Lockheed introduces the first FAA-approved flight data recorder. What are these colloquially called now?

Answer: Black boxes

The 'black box' is now standard equipment on commercial airliners and many military transports. They aren't colored black, but bright colors, so that they can easily be seen in plane wreckage.
13. Who set the women's speed record in 1963?

Answer: Jacqueline Cochran

She flew 1429 MPH in a Lockheed F-104 Starfighter.
14. What company does Martin merge with in the 1960's?

Answer: American-Marietta

The merged company is now Martin Marietta.
15. What 1966 event symbolically foreshadowed the merger of Lockheed and Martin Marietta?

Answer: Two space vehicles made by the companies dock in space

Martin Marietta's Titan-launched Gemini VIII spacecraft and a Lockheed Agena became the first two vehicles to successfully dock (and undock) in space.
