The group reflected the nation's largely pacifist attitude and fought the Roosevelt administration's attempts to aid England in its fight against Nazi Germany. Which of these slogans did the America Firsters use to great effect?

Answer: England Will Fight To The Last American

The AFC was founded by General Robert E. Wood, chairman of Sears, Roebuck Company among others. Famous members include future President Gerald Ford, future Peace Corps director Sargent Shriver, and future U.S. Supreme Court justice Potter Stewart. Probably the best known supporter was aviation hero Charles Lindbergh.

The America First Committee disbanded four days after Japan's attack on the United States.
2. On 1 May 1997, the Labour Party ended 18 years in opposition, defeating the Conservatives decisively. Under Tony Blair's leadership the party moved toward the center, called itself "New Labour" and won 418 seats in the House of Commons. To call attention to perceived Tory failures and a series of scandals during the 1990s, what slogan did Labour use in this election?

Answer: Britain Deserves Better

In addition to their slogan, Labour campaigned using D:Ream's song "Things Can Only Get Better".
3. In the early days of the Great Depression, Americans either loved or hated Huey Long. "The Kingfish" was a far-left populist politician serving as Governor then Senator from Louisiana. Long espoused a radical program of wealth redistribution. Long's plans ended when he was assassinated at the State Capitol in Baton Rouge on September 8, 1935. What slogan did Huey Long use to garner support for his "share the wealth" programs?

Answer: Every Man A King

The Long family was a power in Louisiana politics for much of the 20th Century. Huey Long's brother, Earl was three times governor of the state. Earl Long was portrayed by Paul Newman in the 1989 movie "Blaze" about his relationship with stripper Blaze Starr.
4. It's become the catch-all slogan for groups who see themselves in opposition to "The Establishment". First heard in the U.S. during the 1960s this phrase has been adopted by groups like Vietnam War protesters, The Black Panthers, the Philippine People Power Movement and the Pakistan Peoples Party. It's also the title of a John Lennon song. What is this long-lived and potent slogan?

Answer: Power To The People

"Power To The People" even showed up in an American commercial for auto insurance.
5. Barry Goldwater was U.S. Senator from Arizona and the political face of conservatism in the 1960s. In 1964, Goldwater gained the Republican Party's nomination to run for President to face incumbent Lyndon Johnson. His supporters wore "AuH2O" buttons. What slogan did they chant in support of "Mr. Conservative"?

Answer: In Your Heart You Know He's Right

Democratic supporters of Johnson satirized Goldwater's slogan by chanting "In Your Gut You Know He's Nuts" a reference to Goldwater's supposed warmongering policies.
6. Four years after trouncing Goldwater, LBJ was on the political ropes due to growing public antipathy toward his Vietnam War policies. Eugene McCarthy, a little known Senator from Minnesota ran against LBJ and the war. In March of 1968, McCarthy shocked the nation by winning 42% of the vote in the New Hampshire primary. What slogan was repeated by the college students who worked for McCarthy's campaign?

Answer: Get Clean For Gene

Many of Gene McCarthy's campaign workers migrated to him from the anti-war movement. They were young, long-haired, frequently bearded and sometimes unkempt. The campaign stressed "Get Clean For Gene" urging the workers to cut their hair, shave and generally clean up so as not to frighten the housewives of New Hampshire when campaigning door-to-door. Being "Clean For Gene" also involved leaving one's marijuana stash at home.
7. Dwight Eisenhower soundly defeated Adlai Stevenson in 1952 using the slogan "I Like Ike". In 1956, Eisenhower beat Stevenson by an even bigger margin with the unimaginative slogan "I Still Like Ike".

Answer: true

"I Still Like Ike" is identified on some websites, newspaper articles and even a Wikipedia article as Ike's 1956 slogan. In 1952, Stevenson only won 9 states and in 1956, he carried 7. In neither election did he win his home state of Illinois.
8. Charles Taylor was elected president of Liberia in 1997 campaigning with the slogan "He killed my ma, he killed my pa, but I will vote for him."

Answer: True

The election was held during a cease fire in the country's bloody civil war. Voters apparently feared that, if not elected, Taylor would re-start the war. After only three years, Taylor's policies led to more civil war anyway. In 2012, Taylor was found guilty of numerous war crimes and crimes against humanity. He was sentenced to 50 years in prison.
9. This slogan appeared 15 times on the Soviet Union's coat of arms - once each in the language of all the member republics. Written by Marx and Engels, it originally appeared in "The Communist Manifesto". What was this best-known slogan of the Communist movement?

Answer: Workers Of The World Unite

An alternative version - more inclusive but wordier - was "Workers And Oppressed Peoples And Nations Of The World, Unite". Not quite so catchy.
10. What two word slogan did the Republican party use to wrest control of Congress from the Democrats in 1946?

Answer: Had Enough?

The GOP gained 55 seats in the House of Representatives and 12 in the Senate to take control of Congress for the first time in 14 years. Two years later, President Harry Truman ran against the "do-nothing Republican Congress" and won re-election in the most famous upset in American political history. Democrats also regained control of Congress.
