Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the MF (Medium Frequency) DSC frequency?

Answer: 2187.5 khz

The Digital Selective Calling (DSC) when used as a Distress alert, is the first means of attracting attention, to all shipping and shore stations. It activates a text receiver and can be preprogrammed to include position and type of distress (I.e. fire, explosion) also the ships MMSI (Unique identification number).

It also automatically tunes your radio onto the corresponding Distress working frequency and those of any ship or radio station receiving it.
2. What is the Medium Frequency, Radio Telephone (Voice) Distress frequency?

Answer: 2182 khz

Medium Frequency (MF), with a range of upto 400 miles, this freq range is used when relatively close to land. I.e in the North Sea our rig (Santa Fe 140) is never further than that from any land so MF radio communications would be generally used.
3. What is the VHF (Very High Frequency) DSC frequency?

Answer: ch70

VHF, has a short range which depends on line of sight, for example, the higher your antenna, generally the further you can communicate. So a ship or a rig with antenna's at 35 metres, will have a better communication than a pleasure craft with one at 5 metres. It is accepted that realistically a range of 60 miles is good.
4. What is the VHF R.T. (Voice) Distress frequency?

Answer: ch16

If you where to hear a distress on VHF, it would indicate that the victim of the distress is close by. So all vessel's hearing this would be bound by Maritime Law to offer assistance.
5. What is the distress voice Frequency in the HF (High Frequency) 8 mega hertz range?

Answer: 8291 khz

High Frequency (HF), has a range of upto 1500 miles, although this is effected by atomspheric conditions. If you heard a distress on this frequency band, with no reply, you are bound by law to report it to a coastal station. Please note, the U.K. no longer has Coastal stations and must rely on foreign stations such as Norway or Denmark.
6. What does MMSI stand for in (Global Maritime Distress and Safety System) GMDSS?

Answer: Maritime mobile service indicator

MMSI, this nine digit number acts like a radio telephone number. Calling either an individual ship, geographic area or All ships.
7. What does D.S.C stand for?

Answer: Digital Selective Calling

DSC, this enables ships to send out commercial calls and distress alerts digitally, followed by a traditional radio conversation on selected frequencies.
8. If life or your ship is in immediate danger, what radio call would a ship put out?

Answer: Mayday

Mayday, means that life (Vessel) is in imminent danger. This call would be repeated three times, proceeded with a two tone alarm (On MF or modulated frequency, if time allows) i.e MAYDAY MAYDAY MAYDAY
9. A container is half afloat, a danger to shipping, what radio call would you put out?

Answer: Securite

Securite repeated three times means a danger to navigation, you would also give the position and type of danger. This would also be reported to a coastal radio station or coastguard station
10. In a calm sea, 20 miles from land. From which example would you send the call, Pan Pan?

Answer: Engine failure require a tow

Pan Pan, repeated three times indicates urgent assistance required. Fire and capsizing would be Mayday. The iceberg would be Securite.
