Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Statue of Liberty

Answer: 1886

The Statue was actually completed in the 1870's, but wasn't installed in its present location for another decade due to funding problems in getting the pedestal built.
2. Washington Monument

Answer: 1888

While the monument was finished in 1884, it was not opened to the public until 1888. When you see the Monument, there's a change in the color of it about 150 feet up. Construction was halted for over 20 yrs at that point, and rock from a different quarry was used after work restarted.
3. Wrigley Field

Answer: 1914

It was not originally built for the Cubs, but for a team called the Chicago Whales of the short-lived Federal League. After the league folded, the Cubs bought the Park, and have been there ever since.
4. The Space Needle

Answer: 1962

It was built for the Seattle World's Fair.
5. Mt Rushmore

Answer: 1941

When you look at the sculpture detail, it's amazing that most of the carving was done with dynamite. It was only the last few inches that were removed manually.
6. The Tower of the Americas

Answer: 1968

The Tower was San Antonio's effort at Hemisfair to out do some of the other World's fair landmarks. It's actually higher than either the Space Needle or the Washington Monument.
7. Hollywood sign

Answer: 1923

The sign originally read HOLLYWOODLAND, and was built to promote real estate, not the movie industry.
8. San Francisco cable cars

Answer: 1873

They're the only moving National Historic Landmark.
9. Lincoln Memorial

Answer: 1922

The number of columns, 36, represents the number of states immediately after the end of the Civil War.
10. Gateway Arch

Answer: 1966

The tram system to the top of the arch is a one of a kind combination of an elevator and a Ferris Wheel.
