Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When we say "morning" in English, or any other language, we mean which time of day?

Answer: Sunrise

Around the world the transition from darkness to the light of dawn is recognized and celebrated. Originally the word "morning" meant sunrise, the time of 'morrow' or the new day. Morning has come to mean all of the hours between sunrise, or for some cultures midnight, and noon.
2. Which country, North and South, is called the Land of the Morning Calm?

Answer: Korea

Korea is the Land of the Morning Calm, perhaps due to English translations of early dynasty names, thought to mean morning mountain, or morning sun. This nickname is not used in the Korean language. It was coined and made popular by Percival Lowell in "Choson, the Land of the Morning Calm", a book published in 1885. Korea, both North and South, often decries the names others use for them.
3. In many countries a person of inspiration and achievement is called a Morning Star. Raja Ram Mohan Roy is an example, the father of which country's nationalism?

Answer: India

India calls Raja Ram Mohan Roy the Father of Indian Nationalism and the Morning Star of the Indian Renaissance. He was an early social reformer. The British call John Wycliffe the Morning Star of the Reformation. He was the first to translate the Bible entirely into English.

The morning star is the planet Venus ("bringer of light/dawn") when it shows in the east before sunrise. Venus is also called the Evening Star.
4. There is a major newspaper called DAWN, which prints the daily news, and daily prayer schedules for several major cities in which country?

Answer: Pakistan

Pakistan is the answer, because its major population is Muslim, and they pray (Salat) five times a day - dawn, noon, afternoon, sunset, and evening. Prayer schedules are calculated and provided each day in the DAWN newspaper. Fajr (dawn) prayer is said to be the time that angels assemble. DAWN was founded in 1941 in British India, and is one of the three biggest English-language daily papers of Pakistan.
5. Japan is often called Nippon. What is the meaning of Nippon?

Answer: Land of the Rising Sun

Japan is called Nippon, the Land of the Rising Sun, in part because Ancient China looked east toward Japan and saw only vast ocean, Japan, and the sun. Later the name came to mean its position far east, where the light of dawn first arrives. Nippon or Nihon means more exactly, "source of the sun".

The Great White North (Canada), Emerald Isle (Ireland), and the Red Dragon (China) are names for other countries. Lands within the Arctic circle such as Norway, Sweden, Finland and Lapland, are called Land of the Midnight Sun.
6. In which country may you encounter people, companies, cities and even a car, a train, a battleship and a baseball team named Asahi, "morning sun"?

Answer: Japan

Asahi means "morning sun" or morning sunlight, in Japanese, and it is a common name throughout the country. They have a brewing and soft drink company, an animation company, more than one television network, a car, train, camera, type of exercise, and many towns with this name. Japan also has a weekly magazine called the "Weekly Morning", known locally as simply "Morning".
7. For many Native American nations, the day begins at sunrise. They greet each new day, and make an offering to Mother Earth, Father Sky and the Four Directions. What is most commonly offered?

Answer: Tobacco

Tobacco is for most Native American nations (tribes) a plant with the ability to facilitate communication between humans here on earth, and the spiritual powers, most especially the Creator above. Each morning the sun comes up is a blessing upon the earth, so the sunrise is greeted.

Another healthy cultural ritual is taking anger to the water. If a man, in particular, is angry and destructive, the tribe takes him to the lake, where he is expected to smash the water with a paddle until his anger subsides, and is healed.
8. Turkey has a daily newspaper named "morning" in English. Which word means morning in Turkish?

Answer: Sabah

Founded in 1985, the "Sabah" ("morning/dawn") included a supplement of eight pages featuring "The New York Times" articles translated into Turkish, until 2014. Sabah, an Arabic word, is sometimes used as a girl's name meaning "born in the morning". A famous Lebanese singer uses Sabah as her stage name. In English the "morning paper" refers to all the major newspapers, and their websites, delivering 'breaking' news early each morning.
9. In formal Western etiquette, the term 'morning dress' refers to men wearing black tuxedos to day-time functions.

Answer: False

False. Tuxedos (black-tie ensemble) with tailcoat are elegant evening attire for men, and should never be worn for formal day-time events. One reason is black looks dull in full light and pales the men wearing it. Formal day wear is called 'morning dress'--meaning daylight dress, and consists of grey or striped trousers (called "morning grey") with light or colorful shirts, ties or waistcoats, and a tail-coat. Morning dress is for formal functions during daylight hours, in countries such as Britain, Australia, Canada and the US. Scotland has their own version, called Highland dress. Terribly handsome.
10. Specifying more than a dozen different ways of bathing, this culture asks that you bath each day early in the morning. In which religion is bathing called "snanam" in Sanskrit?

Answer: Hindu

Snanam, bathing, is a vital part of the Hindu religion and culture. Four in the morning is the most auspicious time for a daily morning bath, in part because one is up, cleansed and begins the day early and refreshed, as the Hindu Saints did. Water has important physical, symbolic and spiritual meanings, especially bathing at the Ganges river (Kaamya Snanam), but also ritual bathing and prayer in rivers, ponds, in hot and cold water, while ill, morning bathing, and before yoga. Conversely, the Chinese and Japanese believe one should not cleanse in the morning, but always at night.

Many cultures teach that one should first wash away the dirt and dust on the body before taking a bath.
