Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The motor car came into its own in the 20th century as a favourite means of personal transport for many people. Which of these was the first car model to reach 10 million sales?

Answer: Ford Model T

Between 1908 and 1927, a total of 16.5 million Model Ts were sold. The Morris Oxford name was used between 1913 and 1971 and 640,000 were sold. The Ford Crown Victoria sold more than 5m in two incarnations, the first in 1955 and 1956 and the second from 1980 onwards. The Opel Kadett sold almost 12m between 1962 and 1991.
2. Motor manufacturers can produce several generations of a car under the same model name. Which of these was the best-selling model name of the 20th century?

Answer: Toyota Corolla

Although it changed shape from time to time and there were nine 'generations', more than 37m cars bearing the name Toyota Corolla were sold from 1966 onwards. The Beetle sold more than 21m of the same basic design between 1938 and 1983, while 5.5m Rover Minis were sold between 1959 and 2000 and the Edsel sold just over 100,000 between 1957 and 1959.
3. In the original version of the movie "The Italian Job", the crooks drove minis to make their escape. What make of car did the cops drive?

Answer: Alfa Romeo

The 1969 movie was set in Turin and was part-financed by the Italian car company Fiat, which was based in Turin. Lots of Fiat cars were featured, but all of the chasing (and failing) police cars were from the rival Alfa Romeo group. Incidentally, if you thought you knew all about that car chase you might be interested to know that a sequence in which the minis and Alfas 'waltzed' on an ice rink was left on the cutting room floor. You can see it on youtube by searching for "The Italian Job's Missing Scene".
4. In 2008, the London Times listed the 20 greatest movie car chases of all time. Their top choice was "Bullitt" (1968). What kind of car did Steve McQueen drive in that chase?

Answer: Ford Mustang

Steve McQueen's character was at the wheel of the Mustang for that dramatic chase through the streets of San Francisco. He was chasing the baddies who were in a Dodge Charger. It took three weeks to shoot a sequence that lasted for under 10 minutes on the screen and the cars reached speeds of over 100mph. McQueen did most, but not all, of the driving himself.
5. America's dominance of car manufacturing was threatened after WW2 by the rise of manufacturers from the Far East, initially Japan. Which of these was the first Japanese car to be built in the USA?

Answer: Honda Accord

In 1982 Honda opened a plant at Marysville, Ohio. For the next 15 years Honda was the best-selling manufacturer in the USA.
6. When Barack Obama was on his way to be inaugurated as President of the USA in January 2009, what make of car took him there?

Answer: Cadillac

No one will tell you exactly what security precautions were built into the car, but five-inch armour plating, bullet-resistant glass and run-flat tyres have all been suggested. The Secret Service daubed the car 'The Beast'.
7. When the Austin Allegro was introduced to the British motoring public in 1973. What was unusual about it?

Answer: It had a rectangular steering wheel

When car lovers sit down to compile lists of the best and worst cars ever built, the Allegro usually ends up high on the "worst" list". The proper term for that steering wheel is "quartic" - rectangular, with rounded corners.
8. Cars were often the stars of movies. Which car was the centre of attention in the "Herbie" series of films?

Answer: Volkswagen Beetle

The Disney Corporation made five big-screen movies featuring the lovable 'Bug' between 1968 and 2005. Two TV movies were made in 1982 and 1997. The big screen outings were: "The Love Bug" (1968); "Herbie Rides Again" (1974); "Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo" (1977); "Herbie Goes Bananas" (1980); and "Herbie: Fully Loaded" (2005). On the small screen, "Herbie the Matchmaker" was made in 1982 and "The Love Bug" in 1997.
9. Which model of car was the most common means of personal transport in East Germany?

Answer: Trabant

Despite its small size and only having two doors, it was marketed as suitable for four people. A little over three million were produced between 1957 and 1991. The three 'wrong' answers were all Russian cars.
10. There's a lot of debate about which was the oldest car manufacturing company in the world. Of the four listed, which was the first to produce motor cars?

Answer: Peugeot

The first Peugeot car, a three-wheeler was produced in 1889. It was powered by steam, a concept that was soon abandoned. By 1892, Peugeot was making cars with four wheels and powered by internal combustion engines.
Skoda began manufacturing bicycles in 1895 and started making cars in 1905.
Packard manufactured luxury cars in the USA. The first hit the roads in 1899 and the last in 1958.
Rolls-Royce was founded in 1906, though Henry Royce had been building cars for a few years at that time. Royce was the technical expert, his partner Charles Rolls was the money man.
