Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How old is a New Zealand Brownie?

Answer: Between 7 and 10

Sometimes this is extended but it is officially between 7 and 10.
2. What colour is the New Zealand Brownie uniform?

Answer: Turquoise and Navy

This is the same for the New Zealand Girl Guides and Rangers. Unfortunately there is nothing to tell the girls apart - even their sashes are the same - which creates some confusion at mixed events!
3. What year did Brownies (then called Fairy Peace Scouts) start in New Zealand?

Answer: 1918

The Fairy Peace Scouts were for girls aged 7-12.
4. A New Zealand Brownie is a member of WAGGGS

Answer: Yes

All members of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (including Brownies, Rainbows, Pippins etc) are members of WAGGGS: the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts. There are over 10 million WAGGGS members worldwide.
5. What badges are New Zealand Brownies presented with when enrolled?

Answer: A promise badge, a pack name tape, a district badge and a Taha Wairua (Faith) patch

Part of the promise activity includes exploring your faith so the initial large Taha Wairua (Faith) patch is given on enrollment along with the promise badge (a trefoil with a silver fern) and identifiers for their pack and district. Taha Wairua is in Maori - one of the three national languages of New Zealand.
6. Which of these is not a Specialised Badge?

Answer: Band Aids 'n' Bee Stings

This badge is a unit badge focusing on First Aid. Me, Myself and I encourages girls to spend time discovering more about themselves, Jazz It Up is a musical/dance badge. Science Whizz offers a number of experiments for the Brownies to try at home.
7. What year is the 50th year of Guide Biscuit selling in New Zealand?

Answer: 2007

New Zealand Guide biscuits come in plain, chocolate and mini. The girls help sell them each year and receive a patch for their sash. There is a special '50th' patch for 2007.
8. When is Thinking Day?

Answer: 22nd February

This is the birthday of both Lord and Lady Baden-Powell, the founders of the Scouting and Guiding movement, and is celebrated globally by both Scouts and Guides. It is named 'thinking' as girls are encouraged to remember all the other girls around the world, especially those who may not be as privileged as them.
9. Obtaining the ANZAC Heritage Patch can involve which of the following?

Answer: All of these

ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps and each year, on the 25th of April, the country remembers the services they gave in the First World War and the services of others since then. This badge helps the girls understand the significance of the holiday.
10. When a Brownie is old enough, she can move up to...

Answer: Guides

Pippins go from 6-7, Brownies 7-10, Guides 10-14 and Rangers 14-18 although many factors determine when a girl goes up including friends and maturity level. Rainbows are the British equivalent of Pippins.
