It actually has some 60,000 lakes.

Answer: Belgium

Dutch-Spanish Wars in 16-17th {centuries;} Ramillies in {1706;} Waterloo in {1815;} Mons and Ypres in World War {One;} a second German invasion in World War II. Th term Belgium is of course nowadays applied to a country that did not exist before 1830.

But "Belgicus" was frequently used already in maps of the Low Countries dating back to Mercator and Sanderus. The famous "Leo Belgicus" map represented the "Seventeen Provinces" (including Wallonia, Holland and Flanders) as a lion-shaped territory.

Medieval Bruges was probably the first to be given the nickname as it was an outpost of the Genoese and Venetian business empires. Various Italian merchants had their rich houses here: {Portinari;} Adornes etc. They may have been the first to detect some similarity..But then Belgium is not really the NORTH of Europe... Amsterdam has plenty of canals and Stockholm is built on islets.
