Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Being born and raised in Kentucky, Chris1162 has had the pleasure of running through a certain type of grass. Which type would that be?

Answer: Kentucky Bluegrass

Kentucky Bluegrass is not really blue, however in the spring it produces a blueish purple bud which gives it a blueish tint.

Kentucky is a Commonwealth State boarded by seven states, Ohio, Tennessee, West Virginia, Virginia, Illinois, Indiana and Missouri. Its state song is, "My Old Kentucky Home", written by Stephen Foster in 1852. Kentucky was the 15th state to join the Union on 6 June 1792. The capital is Frankfort, with the largest city being Louisville.

My favorite time of year is autumn, when the foliage is ablaze with colors ranging from the deepest red to the brightest orange as the cooler weather approaches.

2. Veronicavee lives in the Southern Region of Portugal. By what name is it known?

Answer: The Algarve

The Algarve stretches from West to East in the Southern part of Portugal.
It is full of beautiful sandy beaches (some hidden away). However, there is also vast countryside.

It has become more popular in the last 15 years, but still holds its charm.

Sitting on Lagos Marina (west) with a drink and listening to music is one of my favourite things to pass the time.

The climate is very hot in the summer season, which is also the busiest. Throughout the rest of the year it is cooler, but never really cold. We would consider 12C (about 47F) cold.

Hope you manage to visit us very soon.

4. Over to Glasgow (Gaelic "Glaschu"), Scotland for teammate Glaschu. The chorus of the song "I belong to Glasgow", (which many a Glaswegian has attempted to sing on their way home from a Saturday night out) ends with which four words? To help you, here is the previous line: "But when I get a couple of drinks on a Saturday..."

Answer: "Glasgow belongs to me"

Made famous by Will Fyfe, the chorus goes like this:

"I belong to Glasgow.
Dear old Glasgow toon.
Well what's the matter with Glasgow
for it's goin' 'roon and 'roon?
I'm only a common old working chap
as anyone here can see
but when I get a couple of drinks on a Saturday

Glasgow belongs to me".

Glasgow, translated as "dear green place" was made European City of Culture in 1990.

5. Chris4711 lives in a city that was renamed the "City of the Unexpected" for one weekend in September 2016 to honour the centenary of the birth of Roald Dahl. Where do I live?

Answer: Cardiff

Cardiff's transformation into the "City of the Unexpected", (the name reflecting Dahl's "Tales of the Unexpected") involved hundreds of actors, performers and volunteers who took part in events all over the city. They included a high wire act from the walls of the Castle by the "Fantastic Mr Fox", "Miss Ladybird's Wedding" and a "Great Pajama Picnic" in Bute Park. "James and the Giant Peach" were a major part of the themed events. Members of the public, who came in the thousands, never knew what was going to happen next, which added to the fun.(This question by Chris4711)
6. Teammate Glaschu states, "Dunedin in New Zealand is named after this Scottish city whose name in (Scottish) Gaelic is Dun Eideann". Which city is this?

Answer: Edinburgh

Dunedin is the second largest city in the South Island of New Zealand. Edinburgh is the second largest city in Scotland. Glasgow is the largest, with Aberdeen being the third largest. Edinburgh and Dunedin are twinned with each other and both contain an historic thoroughfare named Princes Street.

Answer: Richard III

Richard III was killed at the Battle of Bosworth Field in 1485. His remains were dumped in an unmarked grave. In 2012 bones were found while working on a council car park and it was later proved, following extensive research, that they were indeed the remains of King Richard III.

Some historians believe that he may have been responsible for the death of the Princes in the Tower of London. (Submitted by Chris4711)

9. Being born in Scotland, teammate CardoQ stated "There WAS only one Scottish city which has an underground railway". With stops at Buchanan Street, Hillhead and St Enoch, which of these cities is it?

Answer: Glasgow

Glasgow's underground is known as the "Glasgow Subway" and is only 6.5 miles long with 15 stops on its circular route. Construction began in 1891 and it opened on the 14th December 1896, making it the third oldest underground rail service in the world after London and Budapest.
(Question by CardoQ)
10. Chinese civilization is said to have grown up around one particular river, nicknamed "China's sorrow" because its lethal floods wiped out millions of lives. The LIGHTHEARTED RETURN's teammate tomleetang asks "What is the name of this storied waterway?"

Answer: Yellow River

All these rivers flow through China, but it is the Yellow River (known as Huang He in Mandarin) that was both a boon and a curse to the Chinese. Like many early civilizations, the Chinese settled next to flowing water that created fertile land. However, the Yellow River was also prone to devastating floods. In fact, the floods of the Yellow River are purportedly the only natural disasters to have killed in excess of one million people.
