Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In his own memorial complex on the western end of the National Mall

Answer: Abraham Lincoln

The Lincoln Memorial is one of the most visited sites in the United States with about 6 million visitors each year. It was completed in 1922 by architect Henry Bacon (who designed the memorial) and sculptor Daniel Chester French (who designed the statue).

It features President Lincoln sitting in a chair with quotes from his second inaugural address and the Gettysburg Address. Along the outside of the memorial are inscribed the names of the 36 states of the Union at the time of Lincoln's assassination.
2. Standing with his hands on his hips, at West Point, from where he graduated in 1915

Answer: Dwight Eisenhower

The statue commemorates Eisenhower, specifically for his service to the country during World War II. The uniform Eisenhower is wearing is a replica of the one he wore during the war. John Eisenhower, the president's son, had lent one of his father's uniforms to Robert L. Dean, the sculptor.
3. In Piatt Park, Cincinnati, Ohio, on horseback and wearing a military uniform from the War of 1812

Answer: William Henry Harrison

William Henry Harrison is famous for dying just over thirty days after being elected president. However, prior to this, he was a famous military hero during the Battle of Tippecanoe and during the War of 1812. After the wars, he intended to retire but was nominated for president in 1836, lost, but was elected in 1840.

The statue of Harrison in Cincinnati honors Harrison's service during the War of 1812, when he was first stationed in the city. His funeral also took place there before he was buried in North Bend.
4. One of many in Rapid City, South Dakota; standing next to a chair and his dog Laddie Boy

Answer: Warren Harding

Harding was not a popular president and is often considered among the worst, if not the worst. This is evident by the low number of monuments dedicated to him. One of the few is a statue on the streets of Rapid City, South Dakota. He is depicted standing behind a chair and petting his Airdale Terrier, Laddie Boy, who was perhaps more well liked than Harding.

Laddie Boy was the first "First Pet" to be something of a celebrity, which would be common in later years. He was also used in many ads for animal rights issues.

It should be noted that every president has a statue on the streets of Rapid City, South Dakota and all future presidents will receive on once they leave office.
5. Depicted as a 10 year old in Taman Menteng Park, Jakarta, Indonesia

Answer: Barack Obama

The statue of Barack Obama as a child honors the time the president spent in Indonesia. His mother Ann Dunham had brought Barack with her to Indonesia when she moved there with her second husband Lolo Soetoro.
6. Outside Buffalo City Hall, near Millard Fillmore

Answer: Grover Cleveland

Prior to becoming president, Grover Cleveland had been Mayor of Buffalo for less than a year in 1882. He soon after became Governor of New York, then U.S. president. He stands proudly outside of the Buffalo City Hall on the south side while Millard Fillmore stands on the north side.
7. On an island named after him; wheelchair-bound and reaching out to a little girl on crutches

Answer: Franklin Roosevelt

This statue of Roosevelt can be found in Southpoint Park on Roosevelt Island in New York City. Roosevelt was confined to a wheelchair because of a bout of polio. Since he died, many charities under his name have been dedicated to helping the disabled.

This statue, designed by Meredith Bergmann, is one of the few depicted the president in his wheelchair. Most others show him sitting in a regular chair or on a bench.
8. In the National Museum of American History, posed as Zeus

Answer: George Washington

This statue of Washington was based on the Statue of Zeus at Olympia, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. It was sculpted by Horatio Greenough in 1832. It is a unique interpretation of Washington, who is often depicted on horseback or in military regalia. Here, Washington is shirtless and wearing Greek robes and sandals, similar to how Zeus was in the ancient statue.
9. Arcata Plaza, Arcata, California; sometimes considered controversial; survived the San Francisco Earthquake in 1906

Answer: William McKinley

This statue of McKinley was made by Haig Patigian of San Francisco. When the earthquake struck in 1906, Patigian had to evacuate his building. He tried to take the statue with him, but it was too heavy. After being told the statue melted in the fire, Patigian later discovered it had been saved and it was installed in Arcata, California.

However, in recent times the statue often generates controversy. Arcata is considered a liberal college town and students routinely petition to get the statue removed because of McKinley's "imperialistic" foreign policy.
10. On his estate of Ash Lawn-Highland and under the care of the College of William and Mary

Answer: James Monroe

James Monroe's estate of Highland (later renamed Ash Lawn-Highland) was next to Monticello, Jefferson's home. In the statue, he carries a book, which may represent his famous Monroe Doctrine. He does not wear a hat, unlike in many other statues where he appears wearing a top hat and carrying a sword or military helmet.
