Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Alabama: Which of these is NOT illegal to do on a Sunday?

Answer: Auto racing

According to the Code of Alabama 13A-12-1, any unnecessary labor and some recreational activities on Sunday are prohibited. Even children's chores must be "duties of daily necessity or comfort". There are some exceptions listed such as druggists, florist shops, food stores, auto racing, etc. Violation of this law is punishable by a fine of $10 to $100 and/or jailed up to three months.
2. Alaska: Which of these is illegal to have on your dining room table?

Answer: Salt

Because hydrochloric gas is used in the production of methamphetamines, Alaska Code Section 11.71.200 makes it illegal to possess any salts of it. One of these salts is sodium chloride, otherwise known as common table salt.
3. Arizona: Can you legally be younger than your adopted child?

Answer: Yes

Arizona Revised Statutes 8-102 states that any person 21 years or younger can be adopted, yet ARS 8-101 says that anyone 18 or older is an adult. Since ARS 8-103 allows any adult resident to adopt, you can be up to three years younger than the child that you adopt.
4. Arkansas: Which of these is it illegal to have within 200 yards to and be visible from a state-designated memorial highway?

Answer: Scrap iron

Arkansas Code 5-67-105 bans old disused cars and scrap iron from being near a memorial highway. If the car or iron cannot be moved, a fence must be built so that the car/iron cannot be seen. The fine is $5 a day and is given to the school fund.
5. California: According to STATE law, the only United States flag that CANNOT possibly be legally flown by a state agency has how many stars?

Answer: 49

The State of California accepts the current 50 star flag as the official Flag of the United States so it is of course the one proscribed to be flown within the state. However, Government Code Section 438 allows any US flag purchased before March 18, 1959 to be used. The 49 star flag was official on July 4, 1959 and the 50 star (current) flag was official on July 4, 1960.

This probably resulted from the state not wanting to have to buy flags after Alaska's admission into the US considering that they would have to buy new ones very soon when Hawaii was admitted. But the statute is still on the books so legally a state, county, city, or district agency could use a 48 (or earlier) star flag if it purchased the flag a long time ago.
6. Colorado: You may take how many PAID hours off from work to vote?

Answer: 2

Although polls are open from 7am to 7pm in the State of Colorado (Colorado Revised Statues 1-7-101(1)), this may not be convenient for all voters, so voters are given 2 hours off paid to vote (CRS 1-7-102(1)). Two restrictions however, you must give notice of this leave prior to the day of the election (same statute) and you are not allowed this privilege if there are three hours while the polls are open that you are not required to be at work. (CRS 1-7-102(2))
7. Connecticut: A tavern may NOT sell which of the following?

Answer: Whiskey

Connecticut General Stautes Section 30-26 allows only low-alcohol drinks to be served at a tavern. I wish I could have written this quiz 40 years ago. Women were not allowed to serve liquor (Repealed 1969), sit at bars (Repealed 1969), or stand at bars (Repealed 1972). No, that's not an error! There were three years where a woman could legally sit at a bar but not stand there in the State of Connecticut.
8. Delaware: Which of these scientists must be licensed in order to practice in their field?

Answer: Geologist

Delaware Code Title 24 discusses the licensing of various professions. Chapter 36 covers the field of geology, specifically Section 3607 requires a license to be a working geologist in the State of Delaware.
9. Florida: Florida has some weird laws involving people dying intestate (without a will). Which of the following is NOT one of them?

Answer: If a child is conceived before the death of the parent yet is born after the death of the parent, they get nothing

Florida Statute 732.102(2) states that if there are children from the marriage, the surviving spouse gets the first $60,000 and she gets half of what is left over. However, if there are ANY step-children (natural to the dead parent but not the surviving spouse), the estate is divided 50% to the surviving spouse and 50% to the children. This means that a step-child could cost the surviving spouse up to $30,000 of the inheritance.

Florida Statute 732.103 gives the order of inheritance if there is no surviving spouse. Basically, it traces relatives as far out as descendants of the grandparents. After this, the state gets the estate. However, if ANY of the descendants of the great-grandparents were Holocaust victims, then all of the descendants' great-grandparents are heirs.

Florida Statute 732.107(2) specifies that if Florida gets the inheritance, the assets are sold and the state's Chief Financial Officer pays it into the School Fund.
10. Georgia: What is required if a person wants to hold an elected state office?

Answer: They must be a registered voter

The Georgia State Constitution Article II Section II Paragraph III gives the disqualifications for holding a state office. The FIRST disqualification (even before being a convicted felon) is not being a registered voter.
11. Hawaii: It is legal to commit a crime provided what?

Answer: you only violate the law a little bit

Hawaii Revised Statutes 702-236 defines "De minimis" infractions. Subsection B says that a crime is not a crime if it does not cause harm or "did so only to an extent too trivial to warrant the condemnation of conviction".
12. Idaho: Idaho makes it illegal for one spouse to abandon the other and leave them destitute. What is weird about this law?

Answer: The husband can be punished but the wife cannot

Although Idaho Statute 18-401(3) outlawing spousal abandonment is written in gender neutral language, Idaho Statutes 18-402, 18-403, and 18-404 which punishes spousal abandonment is written so that only an abandoned wife can receive support. As written, husbands do not need to be supported if their wife abandons them.
13. Illinois: This state (and many others) have had laws on the books that will make a something illegal specifically once the US Supreme Court ever reversed itself in the case of Roe v. Wade. What is that crime-in-waiting?

Answer: Abortion

720 ILCS 510 was written in 1975. It states that the only reason that abortion is legal in the State of Illinois is due to a Supreme Court decision (Roe v. Wade). This law pre-emptively makes abortions illegal (unless medically necessary) and is just waiting for Roe v. Wade to be overturned.

The Illinois law has since been repealed, but many states have enforced their older laws once the Supreme Court overturned Roe with the Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization decision.
14. Indiana: A lot of states have rules regulating the times alcohol can be sold. Which day is it LEGAL for a convenience store to sell alcohol?

Answer: Valentine's Day

Indiana Code 7.1-5-10-1 gives the days that alcohol sales are prohibited. On New Year's Day, alcohol can be sold for use on the premises, but no alcohol can be sold by anyone on Christmas or days of elections. I guess they don't want you to go to the polls drunk. It is also illegal to sell alcohol on Sunday (IC 7.1-3-1-14)
15. Iowa: Who are exempted from working on election day?

Answer: Military personnel

Iowa Constitution Article II Section 3 exempts Iowa electors from military duty on the day of election except in "times of war or public danger".
16. Kansas: What is the militia of the State of Kansas?

Answer: Every man between 18 and 45 except those excluded by law

Kansas Constitution Article 8 defines the makeup of the militia. If you belong to a religion that forbids serving in the military, then you are excused from the militia.
17. Kentucky: If you want to sell fowl under two months of age, what is the minimum number that you must sell?

Answer: 6

Kentucky Revised Statutes 436.600 in the "Offenses Against Morality" section. If you want to sell baby chicks, you must do it in a six-pack or more. Anything less is illegal.
18. Louisiana: Stealing this pet from somebody may result in a fine of $3000 and up to ten years in prison, possibly at hard labor.

Answer: Alligator

Louisiana Revised Statute Title 14 Section 67.13 gives a variety of penalties depending on how much the alligator was worth. $500 or more will get the maximum penalty. If the alligator is worth between $100 and $500, the penalty is $2000 and/or two years in prison. An alligator worth less than $100 will only get you a fine of $1000 and/or two years in prison.
19. Maine: Suicide is not illegal in Maine, however what action is a crime?

Answer: Assisting someone in committing suicide

Maine Revised Statute Title 17-A Section 204 makes helping someone kill themselves a crime. There is no corresponding crime for either suicide or attempted suicide.
20. Maryland: What is illegal to sell through vending machines at a nursery school?

Answer: Contraceptives

Maryland Code 10-105 makes it illegal to sell any contraceptive in a vending machine at any school. A person can be fined up to $1000 for each machine used in this crime.
21. Massachusetts: It is illegal to injure what natural item?

Answer: Ice

Massachusetts General Law Chapter 266 Section 106 makes it a crime when a person "cuts, injures, mars or otherwise damages or destroys" ice from an ice pond that may be used for commercial purposes.
22. Michigan: According to the state constitution, which of these is NOT a purpose of education?

Answer: Citizenship

Article VII Section 1. Despite the separation of church and state, the Michigan Constitution expressly lists 'religion' as a benefit of education in its support of a free public educational system.
23. Minnesota: It is illegal to for a retail store to sell flour in this size bag.

Answer: 6 lbs

Minnesota Statute 239.51 makes it a crime to sell flour in a pre-packaged size other than 3, 5, 10, 25, 50, or 100 pounds. Sizes that are less than 3 lbs or multiples of 100 pounds are also allowed.
24. Mississippi: Which of these fall under the legal definition of vagrants?

Answer: All of these

Mississippi Code Section 97-35-37 lists these people (plus ten others) as vagrants. The basic definition of a vagrant is a person without a job or one who earns money through gambling or prostitution. If convicted of vagrancy, these people can be jailed between ten and thirty days and released on bond.
25. Missouri: Is it possible for an employer to fire a woman for NOT getting an abortion?

Answer: Yes, if having an abortion is a qualification for the job

Missouri Revised Statutes 188.105.1(2) allows the employer to fire a woman who does not get a abortion under two conditions: if having an abortion is a bona fide requirement for the job OR if the pregnancy creates an undue hardship on the employer.
