Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. For my first trip through time, I will be speeding through to ancient times where I will be standing in the snow of a high mountain pass. Before me is a wondrous sight. A line of elephants are making their way over the rocky terrain. Which military genius, who planned this historical first, am I standing right next to?

Answer: Hannibal

Hannibal marched his army over the Alps at the start of the Second Punic war. With him were his war elephants. No man had tried to bring elephants over the mountains before. Unfortunately, most of the poor beasts perished before they could be deployed.
2. I am beside a man who is being crucified head down (at his own request) in the year 64 in ancient Rome under the reign of Nero. He has preached the story of Christ and for this is being martyred. He will be known as the first Pope of the Catholic church. Who am I standing right next to?

Answer: St. Peter

St Peter was martyred in Rome and is accepted as the first Pope of the Catholic Church. He did not think that he was worthy of being crucified in the same manner as Christ and so was hung upside down on the cross.
3. I am standing next to a wharf, and in the water I see an acorn shaped apparatus. It is the time of the Revolutionary War in the United States and Sgt. Ezra Lee has just boarded the Turtle, as it is known, to make an attack on the shipping in New York harbor. Which historical first am I standing right next to?

Answer: First military submarine

The Turtle was the first military submarine that was fully autonomous, being propelled by the occupant, Sgt. Lee. Although she failed to sink the Eagle, her intended target, the Turtle established the tenets that have led to the modern nuclear-powered navy: stealth and independence.
4. I am at the Baikonur cosmodrome on April 12, 1961, awaiting a historical first to occur. I have been shown to a launch pad on which a rocket is perched bearing the markings of the Soviet Union. Interestingly, a man was seen to enter the nosecone. What am I standing right next to?

Answer: Vostok 1

Vostok 1 was the rocket that carried Yuri Gagarin in the first manned space flight. The flight lasted only 108 minutes and Gagarin only made one orbit before parachuting to earth. Official congratulations came from around the world, including the USA.
5. I am in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, in the United States on December 17, 1903, to witness the first sustained, controlled, powered heavier-than-air manned flight. I am standing right next to the pilot of this famous airplane. Who would that be?

Orville Wright was the pilot at Kitty Hawk that day. There had been many aviation firsts prior to this one with balloons and gliders but the Wright Brothers finally solved the control problems associated with powered flight and flew 120 feet to prove it.
6. I am in South Africa at the Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa on December 3, 1967. I am standing right next to the gurney transporting Louis Washkansky to the operating room. What historical first am I about to witness?

What first am I about to witness?

Answer: First survivor of a trip over Niagara Falls

Annie Edson Taylor was the first person to survive a plunge over Niagara Falls. Many have tried since and some have died while others were lucky. The barrel containing Annie plunged over the Horseshoe Falls, which was fortunate, since the foot of the American Falls is strewn with boulders which would have crushed her barrel. Annie died years later in relative obscurity and was buried in the "stunter's section" of a New York State cemetery.

Answer: First Englishman in Japan

William Adams was the first Englishman to land in Japan following the foundering of his trading vessel near the Japanese coastline. The daimyo of Edo took him under his wing and developed the early Japanese navy with the help of Adams. The Jesuits had wanted him killed as a heretic and spy after his arrival.
