Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Also known as the Temple of the Dawn, what religious landmark in Bangkok, Thailand, is located on the Chao Phraya River?

Answer: Wat Arun

Wat Arun is one of the most well-known structures in the city. Along with the nearby Wat Pho, the Temple of the Reclining Buddha, Wat Arun is a symbol of Thai culture and Buddhist faith. The Temple of the Dawn, as it is known by many, was built in the early nineteenth century and while thousands upon thousands of 'wats' (or 'temples') can be found on Thai soil, it's one of the most visited in the country because of its architecture, central location, and tendency to host vibrant festivals.

The god after whom the temple was named, Aruna, is also the god of the rising sun.
2. This flag is flown in cities and towns in what Canadian province, one of the first four to join the country during Confederation and once the home of actor Donald Sutherland?

Answer: New Brunswick

New Brunswick was added as a province of Canada alongside Ontario, Quebec, and Nova Scotia in 1867, the year of Confederation, and on Canada Day no less (July 1st). New Brunswick is one of the Maritime provinces due to its position on the eastern coast of the country.

It's north of Maine and is home to several interesting landmarks including Magnetic Hill and Fundy National Park. Most of the province is covered in forests and the edges of the Appalachian Mountain range but it's also home to the cities of Fredericton (the capital), Saint John, and Moncton.
3. This image depicts Kai Tak, a well-known spot in Kowloon Bay, Hong Kong. For which of these unique features was it particularly notorious?

Answer: An airplane runway

Kai Tak was an airport situated just in the middle of the bay in Hong Hong and what made it particularly interesting (and daring) was its runway sitting in the middle of the water. While this runway would normally be of a suitable length, its difficulty was increased by its position between hundreds of skyscrapers and a skyline of mountains making it more dangerous than anything. Kai Tak was closed down in 1998 because a new international airport was constructed in Chek Lap Kok, Hong Kong.

The runway was responsible for several accidents over the years and when it was finally retired it became a unique sporting and entertainment venue on occasion (for concerts, etc.).
4. Found in Scandinavia, these Viking-created markers often feature figures from ancient legends. What are these monuments called?

Answer: Runestones

Many runestones date upwards of a millennium and a half and can be found in Northern Europe, specifically Scandinavia. Originally, these erected stones were carved as grave markers or memorial pieces, signifying the death of a notable member of Viking society or tales but as time went by the runestone also became a palate for storytelling and advertisement.

Many would carve and paint figures from Viking myth onto these large sheets of rock while others would carve and write about themselves. Runestones can be found as far south as Denmark, and others, though debatable, are located in the United States.

The Jelling Mounds, Runic Stones and Church in Denmark are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
5. Found entirely on the island of Borneo, what country features a monarch known as a Sultan and has a high amount of proponents of the Islamic faith?

Answer: Brunei

The country of Brunei is bordered entirely by Malaysia and sits on the South China Sea. Although the island of Borneo is also covered by Malaysia and Indonesia, Brunei is the only country to be completely situated on this landmass. Brunei is known for being led by its Sultan (and it has been for centuries) though it was headed by the British in the late nineteenth century. Since, the country has developed into a more developed nation with its thumb on oil reserves in the sea and natural gas export in the region.

The country is also home to dense rainforests.
6. What is the name of the Czech currency depicted?

Answer: Koruna

When Czechoslovakia broke apart in the early 1990s, the Czech Republic retained this currency, the Koruna, for its economy, and when much of Europe adopted the Euro it retained these coins. The Koruna comes in several denominations ranging from one Koruna coins to five thousand Koruna bills. Slovakia also retained the Koruna but switched to the Euro in 2009. Czechoslovakia used the Koruna from 1919 until its split.

The image depicted is actually from the former Czechoslovakia shortly before the countries were separated.
7. According to international advertisements, "people can't see why kids love the taste of..." what cereal first released in 1984?

Answer: Cinnamon Toast Crunch

Delicious for kids in every way but perplexing to adults, it's claimed that children just love the "cinnamon sugar swirling in every bite". This cereal was first shipped out by General Mills in the mid-1980s but rose in popularity in the next decade so much so that several spin-off cereals (including French Toast Crunch, Peanut Butter Toast Crunch, and Frosted Toast Crunch) were released before they faded off the store shelves.

Another slogan for the product is "The taste you can see", mostly because each square sparkles with cinnamon sugar swirls.
8. The Democratic Republic of the Congo boasts which of these UNESCO Heritage Sites known for mountain gorillas?

Answer: Virunga Mountains

Virunga Mountains is a National Park and is the only UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Spanning nearly eight thousand square kilometers, the park is known for its mountain gorillas and conservation attempts considering local poachings.

The first National Park in Africa, the site was threatened by the war in Rwanda before the turn of the century but has since rebounded in a tourism sense. Nyiragongo Volcano, one of the mountains of the region, also features the world's largest lake of lava.
9. Which of these words, written in French, describes the colour shown?

Answer: Brun

'Brun' is the French word for brown while the other options aren't actually French words. Shades of brown include autumn, chocolate, coffee, and chestnut. It's a common hair colour as well as the team name for the Cleveland NFL team (the Browns).
Other French colours include 'Orange' (for orange), 'Bleu' (for blue), 'Rouge' (for red), 'Jaune' (for yellow), and 'Vert' (for green).
10. What African country whose official language is Kirundi and which received independence in the 1960s (from Belgium) can be attributed to this flag?

Answer: Burundi

Burundi is a landlocked nation in the center of Africa's southern half. Known for a history of war and unrest, Burundi has also been at the bottom of the GDP lists on numerous occasions. While it has a large population its size is very small. Nonetheless, it's slightly larger than its neighbour, Rwanda.
The flag of Burundi reflects its past struggles and its people; the colours are representative of its history while the stars symbolize the different groups that played a big role in shaping its land.
