Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Making things easier for the learner, Vietnamese has one simple expression for hello and goodbye. What is this term?

Answer: Chao

To say hello to your male friend you can say 'chao anh'. Say goodbye the same way!
2. No basic language course would be complete without learning the word for 'thank you'. How do you say this all important term in Vietnamese?

Answer: Cam on

It's pronounced something like 'gum un'...but with tones added of course!
3. What do you call a person who is clearly a lot younger than you?

Answer: em

'Em' is the unisex term for younger sibling and should be used when speaking with younger folks. If the person is a child you may also choose to call them 'con'.
4. 'Chi co khoe khong?' The preceding question could be best translated into English as which of the following?

Answer: How are you feeling?

'Chi' is the term for older sister, in this case I used it as 'you'. 'Co khoe khong' literally translates as 'have health no'. Add it all up and you get...how are you feeling (or how are you doing).
5. Which of the following is not a beverage?

Answer: Com

'Com' means 'cooked rice', which you definitely wouldn't want to drink. The other words are defined as follows: Co-ca (Cola), nuoc cam (orange juice), and sua (milk).
6. Many people may ask you if you are an American when you visit Vietnam. How do you say 'American' in Vietnamese?

Answer: Nguoi My

'Nguoi My' is the term for a person from the U.S. The term for the United States is 'Nuoc My' which translates literally as 'country beautiful'. Interestingly, the Chinese term 'Meiguo' also means 'beautiful country'. Guess they must think we're pretty hot stuff! Other nationalities listed above include: British (Nguoi Anh), Japanese (Nguoi Nhat) and French (Nguoi Phap).
7. Here's one you can get by simply visiting a Vietnamese restaurant! 'Pho' is which of the following foods?

Answer: Noodle soup

There's nothing like a big bowl of pho! Don't forget the nuoc mam (fish sauce)!
8. The Vietnamese language has 6 different tones, true or false?

Answer: True

You'd better believe it...and they are very difficult to master. By comparison, Mandarin Chinese only has 4 (with a neutral tone) and Cantonese has 8!
9. Vietnamese is most closely related to which of the following languages?

Answer: Cambodian

The Vietnamese and Cambodian languages both belong to the very small language family called Austro-Asiatic. Vietnamese has many loan words from Chinese, but only shares its roots with Cambodian amongst the languages listed.
10. I hope that you enjoyed the quiz. If I asked the question, 'Did you like this quiz?' and you wanted to answer 'yes' how would you go about saying 'yes' in Vietnamese?

Answer: Da Vang

'Da Vang' is the correct word for 'yes' in Vietnamese. Happy travels!
