Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What early American president created his own version of the gospels using scissors and glue?

Answer: Thomas Jefferson

Informally known as the Jefferson Bible, it is formally "The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth." It removes all supernatural and divine references, and concludes with Jesus being buried in John 19. For many years, members of Congress were given the Jefferson Bible as a gift when they were sworn in. The University of Virginia placed the full-text on-line; fitting, since Jefferson founded the school.
2. Which of these US presidents was not interred in a church?

Answer: James Monroe

Monroe is buried at Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, Virginia.
John Adams and John Quincy Adams are buried next to each other in the basement of the United First Parish Unitarian church in Quincy, MA. Woodrow Wilson is buried in Washington National Cathedral, the only president buried in Washington DC.
3. Which two presidents were Quakers?

Answer: Hoover and Nixon

Of the first 44 presidents, Hoover and Nixon were the only two Quakers. Hoover used the word affirm (instead of swear) when taking the oath of office; Nixon used swear. Coolidge was a Congregationalist, Buchanan was Presbyterian, and Fillmore was a Unitarian.
4. Who was the first Baptist to serve in the White House?

Answer: Warren Harding

Although Woodrow Wilson grew up in the South, he was a Presbyterian. As a matter of fact, his father was a Presbyterian minister. Harding, Truman and Carter were all Baptists - as is Bill Clinton, even though Hilary is a Methodist.
5. Who was the first Congregationalist to be elected president?

Answer: Calvin Coolidge

Cleveland and Eisenhower were both Presbyterians, while LBJ was a member of the Disciples of Christ. Eisenhower was a Jehovah's Witness for much of his life, but switched to the Presbyterian church during his presidency.
6. John F Kennedy gave a famous speech on religion to a group of ministers during his 1960 campaign. Where did he give that speech?

Answer: Houston

Kennedy gave the speech in front of the Greater Houston Ministerial Association on September 12, 1960. In it, he states his strong belief in the separation of church and state. "I am not the Catholic candidate for President. I am the Democratic Party's candidate for President who happens also to be a Catholic."
7. What religion was John F Kennedy?

Answer: Roman Catholic

Kennedy was the first Roman Catholic to serve as president. Interestingly enough, Martin Sheen, who has portrayed Kennedy in film, played a Catholic president on "The West Wing." Sheen himself is Catholic.
8. What is the name of the minister who caused Barack Obama some trouble during the 2008 campaign?

Answer: Jeremiah Wright

Jeremiah Alvesta Wright, Jr was the pastor at Trinity United Church of Christ on the south side of Chicago for 36 years (1972-2008). He was well known for fiery sermons which question the policies of the United States government.
9. Which of these presidents was not the son of a minister?

Answer: Jimmy Carter

Chester A Arthur's father, William, was a Baptist minister. Grover Cleveland's father, Richard, was a graduate of Princeton Theological Seminary who served Congregationalist and Presbyterian congregations. Woodrow Wilson's father, Joseph Ruggles Wilson, was a Presbyterian minister.
Carter's father was a peanut farmer and local politician. Carter himself is one of the more religious people to serve as president. He taught Sunday School at his Baptist church for many years, even after he was president.
10. Who was the first Jewish person appointed to a cabinet position by the President of the United States?

Answer: Oscar Straus

Oscar Straus was named Secretary of Commerce and Labor by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1906 and served until 1909. A statue honoring Straus is in front of the Ronald Reagan Commerce Building in Washington DC.
Brandeis was the first Jewish Supreme Court Justice, appointed by Woodrow Wilson in 1916. Judah Benjamin did have a high ranking government position (Secretary of War), but in the government of the Confederate States of America.
Emanuel, a member of Congress from Chicago, was selected by Barack Obama to be White House Chief of Staff.
