Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Gillette advertised their razors during the late 2000s using three sportsmen. Tiger Woods and Thierry Henry were two of them. Who was the third?

Answer: Roger Federer

Gillette advertised its products with the slogan 'The Best a Man Can Get', so choosing three of the best known sports icons must have seemed a great idea. Since then, footballer (soccer player) Henry has been vilified in the UK for a blatant handball in a qualifying match for the 2010 World Cup, which led to the Republic of Ireland being eliminated from the tournament. Golfer Woods has been exposed as a serial 'love cheat' and Federer is no longer the invincible tennis player he was, having lost the 2009 US Open to Juan Martin del Potro.
2. Ray Parker Jr appeared during 2009/10 singing a version of 'Ghostbusters' to promote which company?

Answer: 118 118

Ray Parker Jr dresses up as a postman and a bus conductor, while singing 'Who You Gonna Call? 118', which is a telephone directory service. Probably the worst line is 'I ain't afraid of no goats' as he releases a goat from the boot of a car - not exactly an everyday occurrence in London.
3. DFS was a regular television advertiser in the early 21st century, renowned for its never-ending 50% off sales. What did they actually sell?

Answer: Sofas

Hurry now, because the half-price sale finishes on Sunday (but don't worry, it starts again on Monday morning). The adverts, like the sales, seem to have been on television for ever, or perhaps it just feels like it. The current company was set up in 1983 and sold in April 2010 for a reported 500 million pounds, so they must have sold a few sofas now and again.
4. Which DIY store advertises with the slogan 'It's Got Our Name On It'?

Answer: Wickes

Wickes has been more of a trade supplier, rather than in the DIY market, but has been trying to widen its appeal with a series of adverts. The slogan is meant to show that the company is proud of its products. The adverts took this literally with 'Wickes' sanded into the floor or the new decking, which is not quite what I'd want in my home.

The other options are well established DIY chains.
5. Gocompare.com uses which type of singer in its 2010 adverts?

Answer: Tenor

There were several different versions of these adverts, which all began with people discussing their concerns over insurance. The singer, a comedic Italian opera singer, then popped up to sing a song telling them to visit 'go compare', a price comparison site. The song, unfortunately, was something of an earworm.
6. In 2007 Cadburys promoted their Dairy Milk chocolate bar by using Phil Collins's song 'In the Air Tonight'. In the advert, who was playing the drums?

Answer: A gorilla

The gorilla was a huge hit, and the advert spawned several parodies on YouTube. The gorilla was an actor in a suit, not Phil Collins, with the face being animatronic. Meerkats advertise a financial comparison site, and Roger Taylor was the drummer for Queen.
7. John Lydon, aka Johnny Rotten, denied his anarchist roots by appearing in 2008/9 advertisements for which product?

Answer: Country Life butter

John dressed up in tweeds as a country gentleman for this advertisement, extolling the virtues of the brand. He used the money to fund a tour for his band, Public Image Limited, in December 2009. All the other products have been advertised on television, with the most memorable probably being Walls' 'Just One Cornetto' sung to the tune of 'O Sole Mio'.
8. The phrase 'It Does Exactly What it Says on the Tin' has made its way into everyday usage. Which company introduced it in its adverts?

Answer: Ronseal

The company sells wood stains and dyes, and started advertising with this phrase in 1994. They continue to use the slogan in 2010 and it is now used to denote anything that is simple and meets expectations. In 2010 Cuprinol was using an adaptation of 'The Self Preservation Society' called 'The Wood Preservation Society'. Dulux sells paint and has advertised since the 1960s using an Old English Sheepdog, now popularly referred to as a Dulux dog. Crown is another paint company, but I cannot recall any particularly memorable adverts for their products.
9. If you responded to 'Sheilas' Wheels' advertisements, what would you be buying?

Answer: Insurance

With an irritatingly catchy tune, the company advertised insurance for women only. Three women, dressed in pink sequins (no cliches, there), sing in the back of a car 'for bonza car insurance deals, girls get on to Sheilas' Wheels'. Presumably, the Australian slang relates to women being called 'sheilas' down under.
10. 'Calm Down Dear, It's a Commercial' became a catchphrase for Esure insurance. Who starred in the adverts?

Answer: Michael Winner

The adverts starring Michael Winner ran from 2002 until 2005 and a new version came out during 2007. The adverts showed Winner colliding with other vehicles, and coming out with the catchphrase when the irate drivers berated him. His directing skills are undoubtedly better than his acting ones. The other options are other British film directors.
