Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where in the world would you see the Atomium?

Answer: Brussels, Belgium

The Atomium has nine 18 m (60 ft) diameter stainless steel clad spheres. They are linked into the shape of a single cell of an iron crystal magnified 165 billion times. It was designed by the engineer André Waterkeyn and architects André and Jean Polak and was erected in 1958 when the World Fair took place in Brussels.
2. In Catalonia there is often an unusual figure included in nativity scenes. What is he doing?

Answer: Defecating

This character is called "el caganer" which means "the crapper". You will normally find him somewhere near the back. It is an old Catalonian custom to include him in the nativity scene and is said to bring good luck. Although it is most common in Catalan, "el caganer" can also be found in Murcia, Portugal and Naples.
3. In which African country can you famously see goats climbing trees?

Answer: Morocco

The goats only climb one type of tree. This is the argan tree, because it bears fruit that the goats love. When they have polished off all the fruit that can be reached from the ground, they begin to climb into the trees. Humans do not eat this fruit so the goats have no competition for it.
4. How many official languages has Switzerland?

Answer: 4

Switzerland has four official languages i.e. German, French, Italian and Romansh. Romansh, which is only spoken in two small areas of the country, has been recognised as a national language of Switzerland since 1938, and as an official language since 1996.
5. Which is the national flower of Wales?

Answer: Daffodil

The national flower of Wales is the daffodil. It is widely worn on 1st March which is Saint David's day, and Saint David is the patron saint of Wales. In Welsh the flower is known as St. Peter's leek, and the leek is also a symbol of Wales.
6. What is the currency of Australia?

Answer: Australian Dollar

The Australians used pounds sterling until 1963, when they changed to decimal currency. There was some discussion about the name of the new currency and Sir Robert Menzies who was prime minister at the time favoured 'The Royal'. However, the dollar was the name chosen.
7. What would you be being asked if someone said to you 'Comment allez vous?'

Answer: How are you?

This is French for 'How are you?'. Literally translated it means 'How are you going?'. Comment vous allez is not a question in itself but can be the beginning of a question such as 'Comment vous allez faire' 'What are you going to do?'.
8. What colours do Hindu brides in India traditionally wear on their wedding day?

Answer: Red, pink and orange

Red is the most popular colour for Indian brides, but pink or orange dresses may be worn, or the colours may be mixed. Indian weddings are spectacular occasions, and sometimes go on for days so there may be several dresses. As everywhere the bride is the star of the show, and normally wears a great deal of gold jewellery, which has often been given to her by her parents as part of their wedding gift.
9. In the United Kingdom we raise our glasses and say 'Cheers' before drinking. What would you say in the same circumstances in Japan?

Answer: Kampai

When dining in company in Japan it is bad manners to lift your glass until everyone is served. Once everyone has their drink someone will raise their glass and say 'Kampai' and then you can too. "Rabu retaa" means a love letter, "kazoku" means family, and "nana" means mother.
10. Where in Europe would you be able to see macaques living wild?

Answer: Gibraltar

In Gibraltar live the only wild colony of macaques outside of Africa. They have become one of the area's main tourist attractions, but caution is needed because they can get angry and bite if they don't get what they want quickly enough. Although they are called Barbary Apes they are in fact monkeys, and are usually found on the coast of East Africa.
