Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. After passing your driving test, you suffer permanent ill health. This affects your driving. What must you do?

Answer: Inform the licensing authority

In the event of a short-term illness like flu, that affects your ability to drive, you would simply not drive until you are recovered. For a long-term illness, contact the authorities.
2. If a trailer swerves or snakes when you are towing it, what should you do?

Answer: Ease off the accelerator and reduce your speed

All the rest would likely make the problem worse. Hitting the brake may cause the trailer to break off and crash into the back of you. The others would allow the swerve control.
3. A excessively heavy load on your roof rack will do what?

Answer: Reduce stability

A heavy load will shift the centre of gravity of your vehicle and could make you more likely to skid or even roll over. To avoid this avoid putting too much weight on the rack.
4. You are approaching roadworks on a motorway. What should you do?

Answer: Obey all speed limits

In motorway roadworks, you are sometimes, but not always, directed to use the hard shoulder, especially where the right-hand lane is closed. Therefore the hard shoulder is not correct. There often are lower speed limits to protect the traffic in contraflows or narrow lane and you must obey these.
5. You are turning left into a side road. Pedestrians are crossing the road near the junction. Which of the following must you do?

Answer: Wait for them to cross

When you turn into a side road pedestrians who are already crossing have priority so you must give way. Doing otherwise is against the law. Waving them on is inappropriate as they are already crossing.
6. The left-hand pavement is closed due to street repairs. What should you do?

Answer: Watch out for pedestrians walking in the road

Remember that pedestrians walking in the road may have their backs to you, so give them plenty of space. Otherwise your vehicle may hit them in any sudden movement.
7. What type of emergency vehicle is fitted with a green flashing beacon?

Answer: Doctor's car

Doctors on emergency call may display a flashing green beacon. Slow-moving vehicles have amber flashing beacons. Police, fire and ambulance service vehicles have blue flashing beacons.
8. In windy conditions, when do you need to take extra care?

Answer: Passing pedal cyclists

In windy conditions, cyclists are all too easily blown about and may wobble or steer off course. So hang back until they see you and are ready for the vehicle passing by them.
9. What is most likely to cause high fuel consumption?

Answer: Harsh braking and accelerating

Harsh braking and accelerating is one of the major causes of high fuel consumption. This causes the engine to take more petrol after each brake.
10. Which of these is most likely to deter the theft of your vehicle?

Answer: An immobiliser

An anti-theft device like an immobiliser makes it more difficult for the would-be thief to steal your car. You should always be prepared for these events.
