Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Adopted in 1985, what pistol is the official sidearm of the US Armed Forces?

Answer: M9

The M9 is the military version of Beretta's M92FS 9mm semi-automatic pistol, which replaced the Colt M1911A1 as the US standard issue sidearm in 1985. The Mk23 is a .45 caliber pistol designed for US Special Forces, but is not standard issue to the military at large.

The M11, depending on who you ask, is either a submachinegun from Ingram/MAC, or the military version of the SIG-Sauer P228, neither of which is standard issue.
2. Which of these weapons doesn't belong in this group?

Answer: M-14

The M-14 is a 7.62mm battle rifle. All of the others are different versions of the same basic rifle, the Stoner AR-15 (later known as the M-16), and are all chambered in 5.56mm.
3. The AK-74 fires a larger caliber round than the M-16.

Answer: False

The M-16 fires the 5.56mm NATO cartridge. The AK-74 fires a 5.45mm bullet, and should not to be confused with the AK-47, which fires a 7.62mm bullet.
4. The M136 is what type of weapon?

Answer: Rocket launcher

The M136 is more commonly known as the AT-4, an 84mm one-shot disposable rocket launcher.
5. The Enfield L85 (also known as the SA80) is the standard issue assault rifle of the British Army. It is chambered in 5.56mm, and has a bullpup configuration. What does "bullpup" mean?

Answer: The action is located behind the grip.

Bullpup weapons are easy to spot... since the action is located behind the grip, the magazine loads towards the rear of the weapon, rather than in front of, or inside the grip. The result is a weapon that is more compact than a conventional rifle, yet still has an equivalent barrel length.
6. The Barret Model 82A1 is a .50 caliber sniper rifle, primarily intended for the AMR role. What does "AMR" mean?

Answer: Anti Material Rifle

Although devastating against personnel, the Barret "Light Fifty" M82A1 is primarily designed to damage or destroy equipment and vehicles by shooting at key components, such as viewing prisms, fuel deposits, and communication electronics.
7. Which of the following is NOT a distinguishing difference between the Soviet-built RPG-7 and RPG-18?

Answer: The RPG-18 is an original design.

The RPG-18 is actually NOT an original design. It is almost a direct copy of the US M72 LAW rocket. It is a disposable, one-shot launcher. And yes, the RPG-7 launcher contains (at least in original design) a fair amount of wood and includes a built-in scope.
8. Which of the following weapons doesn't belong in this group?

Answer: M24

All of these weapons are 7.62mm sniper rifles. However, the M24, the US Army's current sniper rifle, is the only one that is bolt-action. All the rest are capable of semi-automatic fire.
9. What NATO weapon is the closest match to the Soviet-designed AGS-17?

Answer: Mk19

The AGS-17 is a fully-automatic tripod-mounted 30mm grenade launcher, which most closely matches with the Mk19 40mm fully-automatic grenade launcher. The M203 is a single-shot grenade launcher, the M240G is a machine gun, and the AT-4 (as mentioned earlier) is a single-shot rocket launcher.
10. The IMI Tavor is a next-generation 5.56mm assault rifle, designed with several modern features. What does "IMI" stand for?

Answer: Israeli Military Industries

The Tavor was designed for use by Israeli military forces, and is intended to stand up to harsh desert conditions. A shortened version, the Tavor Micro, was designed for the Mossad, Israel's primary intelligence service.
11. Who designed and manufactures the revolutionary P-90 assault weapon?

Answer: Fabrique Nationale

The Fabrique Nationale P-90 is a wierd gun... highly influenced by ergonomic design, with a unique top-feeding mechanism. It fires the proprietary 5.7mm FN cartridge, which is capable of penetrating both sides of a modern combat helmet at a range of 50 yards.
12. How far is the average soldier expected to be able to throw an M67 fragmentation hand grenade, and how wide is the M67's casualty radius?

Answer: 35 meters / 15 meters

Weighing in at a whopping 14 ounces, these little palm bombs can be thrown 40 meters by an average soldier, and have a casualty-producing radius of 15 meters. Within 5 meters, they are considered nearly 100% lethal, and thus have a 5 meter KILL radius.
13. The M203 underbarrel grenade launcher and the Mk19 automatic grenade launcher both use the same ammunition.

Answer: False

Believe it or not, although they are both 40mm grenade launchers, they CANNOT use interchangeable ammunition. The M203 uses a low-velocity cartridge, with a shorter case length. The Mk19 uses a higher velocity, higher-pressure cartridge with a longer case length. The 40mm rounds for the M203 simply won't feed into a Mk19, and the Mk19's rounds will not chamber in an M203.
14. The Type 91 is a 35mm non-lethal projectile launcher that is primarily in service with what nation's armed forces?

Answer: China

The Type 91 looks very similar to the US's M203, and can be used mounted to a rifle, attached to a vehicle, or by itself. It was developed and fielded by the Chinese People's Liberation Army. It is specifically designed to launch non-lethal projectiles for crowd and riot control.
15. You and your team are assigned to rescue a hostage, being held in a room by an unknown number of bad guys. Which of the following grenades are you most likely to use during the rescue?

Answer: M84

The M84 is a stun grenade, commonly referred to as a "flashbang" because it produces a loud noise and a series of bright, disorienting flashes. It is the best choice if you want to stun the occupants of a room without endangering hostages or friendlies in the room.

The M67 is a fragmentation grenade (you should have picked up on that from an earlier question) which will likely kill everyone in the room. The M15 is a white phosphorous grenade that scatters burning material ( at 5,000 degrees Fahrenheit!) over a 17 meter radius, and will probably set everyone in the room on fire.

The Mk3A2, although technically designated a "concussion" grenade, is NOT the same as a stun grenade. It is essentially a half-pound of TNT, and in close quarters can be JUST as lethal as a fragmentation grenade, despite the fact that it is not designed to throw fragments.

It is used when the presence of fragments would endanger friendly personnel in the nearby area (thin walls, for example), or when the risk of damage to equipment is too great for a fragmentation grenade. If you chose anything but the M84, you probably just killed or seriously injured everyone in the room, including all the hostages. You're fired.
