Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "I have committed many acts of cruelty and had an incalculable amount of men killed, never knowing whether what I did was right. However I am indifferent to that what people think of me."

Answer: Genghis Khan

Genghis Khan said this just after he ordered the sacking of Samarkand, one of the world's foremost trading centers. Genghis Khan finally won after a savage, week-long battle in which the Mongols used their slaves as decoys and and entered the the city by stealth where they pillaged and raped at will.
2. "Political power grows out of the barrel of a gun."

Answer: Mao Tse-Tung

This quote was said to have originally been coined at jokingly by Mao after a large rally outside Tiananmien Square, celebrating the fall of Chiang Kai-Shek's Kuomintag, or Nationalist Army. The rest, as they say, is history.
3. "Pastime with good company I love and shall until I die ... My heart is set, all goodly sport, for my comfort, who shall let me prevent."

Answer: Henry VIII

It would seem that we can add bad poetry to the other list of Henry's atrocities. The lovestruck young noble sent this particular piece of this trite verse to Lady Anne Boleyn, who as you may recall he later had beheaded.
4. "What an artist dies with me!"

Answer: Nero

The following quote was taken penned by one of Nero's personal enemies, one Gracchus Julius Virgilius. Virgilius is believed today the be the one who propagated the myth of Nero fiddling while Rome burned, despite the fact that Nero himself commanded the Roman fire brigade.
5. "Clemency is parricide."

Answer: Maximilian Robespierre

The leader of the French Revolution and France's military dictator during the self-proclaimed Reign of Terror coined this particular phrase after declaring that these trials could have two possible outcomes: acquittal or death.
6. "I laugh when anyone says I masterminded anything".

Answer: Tzu Hsi (Cixi)

Tzu Hsi, also known as Cixi, (my apologies to anybody who got that wrong on account of the trans-lingual dialect change), was the last of the Chinese Dowager Empresses. Cixi's personal title was "Mother Auspicious Orthodox Heaven-Blessed Prosperous All-Nourishing Brightly-Manifest Calm Sedate Perfect Long-Lived Respectful Reverend Worshipful Illustrious Worshipful Empress Dowager". I only hope that the name is shorter in Chinese.
7. "I will make it part of the mainland".

Answer: Alexander the Great

Alexander the Great said this before his brutal conquest of the Island of Tyre. It was after this particular conquest (read: butchery) that historians believe put Alexander in the Koran. According to the Koran, Alexander will come again to ravage the world at the End of Times.
8. "A small concentrated defense can eliminate a large overwhelming offense."

Answer: Atilla the Hun

Am I the only one that sees the irony with this particular quote? Attila didn't have really anything to defend, as the Huns nomads.
9. "I intend to open this country up to democracy and I will jail anybody who says otherwise."

Answer: Robert Mugabe

I find it difficult to believe that President Mugabe could say this with a straight face ... Today, largely thanks to Mugabe's efforts, Zimbabwe remains on Amnesty International's top list of dangerous places to inhabit.
10. "I myself consider myself to be the most important figure in the world".

Answer: Idi Amin

He must have also considered himself to be the most modest... The President of Uganda went on a killing spree in his country that ended in 300,000 deaths.
