Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The language of Euskera is the native language for the people in which region?

Answer: Basque

According to an article in the January/February 2008 issue of "The Atlantic", the number of Euskera speakers has grown, and totalled about a fourth of the total Basque population of three million. While the language was suppressed during the Franco dictatorship in Spain, it is again being taught in the Basque schools. Since Euskera has no known links to any other language, it is central to the Basque identity.

While use of the language is growing, the percentage of Basques who favor independence from Spain has held steady at about 35 percent.
2. The Tamil Tigers fought for their own independent state since 1983. In which country did this conflict take place?

Answer: Sri Lanka

While in 2006 the Tigers held 15,000 sq km of land in Sri Lanka, by 2009 the Sri Lankan army and navy had just about destroyed the Tamil resistance.
3. Chechnya is a Russian republic which fought two wars during the 1990s for independence from Russia. Ethnic Chechens make up over 90% of this republic. Which statement is correct about these ethnic Chechens?

Answer: Most are Sunni Muslim.

The country converted to Sunni Muslim between the 16th and the 19th centuries. Most of the Russian minority in Chechnya is Russian Orthodox, but the 2002 census showed that this Russian minority had dwindled to only 3.7%, down from 28.1% in 1939.
4. The Dalai Lama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989. He is considered the spiritual leader of which Asian region?

Answer: Tibet

In addition to being the Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama is also considered the head of the Tibetan government-in-exile. He fled to India in 1959, following a failed uprising against Chinese rule. In 2005 he entered into talks with Chinese leaders to resolve the issue of Tibet's status, with the idea that he would accept Chinese rule, but would work towards greater autonomy for Tibetans.
5. The republic of Nagorno-Karabakh fought a war of independence from 1998 to 2004. However, it is still had not been recognized by any other country, and remains technically part of Azerbaijan. Which neighboring country has been vying with Azerbaijan for control of Nagorno-Karabakh?

Answer: Armenia

The population of Nagorno-Karabakh is 95% ethnic Armenian. Yet, in one of those odd quirks of history, it remains part of Azerbaijan.
6. Even the United States has its share of separatist movements. The movement called the "Second Republic" advocates the secession of which state from the USA?

Answer: Vermont

The Second Republic is a serious movement which has been gaining steam. The name refers to the time period of 1775-1791, when Vermont was its own separate republic, prior to being admitted to the U.S. as the 14th state in 1791. Separatist movements are also active in the other states mentioned as alternative answers.
7. There are a number of active separatist movements among the provinces of Canada. But which province had voter referendums concerning secession in 1980 and 1995?

Answer: Quebec

In the 1995 referendum, secession was defeated by the narrow margin of 50.58% to 49.42%. Most geographical regions of Quebec voted for secession, but the more populated areas carried the day for the anti-secession forces.
8. The Karen are a hill people who have been fighting for independence since January 31, 1949. In which country has this ongoing struggle been taking place?

Answer: Myanmar (Burma)

One wonders why any government would endure this sort of prolonged conflict, instead of simply granting independence to the disaffected group.
9. The Shining Path (Sendero Luminoso) is a separatist movement operating in Peru.

Answer: false

The Shining Path is indeed a movement still (sporadically) active in Peru, but it is not a separatist movement. Rather, it seeks to change Peru's government to a Maoist government.
10. Following the breakup of the Soviet empire, the former country of Yugoslavia broke up into a number of smaller countries. Which of these is the largest in terms of area?

Answer: Serbia

Serbia's area is 77,474 sq km, while Croatia is 56,542 sq km in area. Bosnia and Herzegovina is smaller still, at 51,209.2 sq km, while Slovenia is the smallest, at 20,273 sq km.
