Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. We start at one of the world's most famous monuments - The Cenotaph at the Peace Memorial Park. In which country do more than a million visitors a year pass by here?

Answer: Japan

Peace Memorial Park is built on an area that was once the busiest downtown residential and commercial district in Hiroshima, Japan. The area was completely leveled by the nuclear bomb that was dropped here on August 6, 1945. The park acts not only as a monument to the estimated 140,000 victims, but also highlights the horrors of war and as an advocate for world peace.
2. The three soldiers pictured here form part of which monument in Washington D.C.?

Answer: Vietnam Veterans Memorial

Ground was set aside by Congress in July 1980 for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. A nationwide competition was held to attract designs and work began in March 1982. Eight months later, on November 13, 1982, the final memorial was dedicated. The monument consists of two gabbro walls, each 246' 9" long. Where the walls meet, at their highest point, they are just over 10-feet high. Each tapers down to just 8 inches at the farthest end.

The names of more than 58,000 service personnel who died in the Vietnam War are carved into the walls. Facing the wall, a short distance away, is the pictured bronze statue known as "The Three Soldiers" (or sometimes The Three Servicemen).

They are clearly identifiable as White American, African American and Hispanic American.
3. Established in 1938, the Eternal Light Peace Memorial (pictured) is a monument to those who died at which U.S. National Battlefield site?

Answer: Gettysburg PA

Dedicated by President F.D. Roosevelt in January 1938, the natural gas "Flame of Eternal Peace" sits atop a tower on a stone terrace overlooking the site of the Civil War Battle of Gettysburg in Pennsylvania. The flame is visible from a distance of more than 20 miles.
The monument is the work of sculptor Lee Lawrie, who also produced the bronze "Statue of Atlas" that stands in Rockefeller Center in New York City.
4. The spectacular "Imagine Peace Tower" was sponsored by Yoko Ono as a tribute to John Lennon. It can be seen on an island near which European capital city?

Answer: Reykjavík, Iceland

The Imagine Peace Tower was unveiled in 2007 with Yoko Ono, Lennon's son Sean Lennon, former Beatle Ringo Starr, Olivia Harrison, widow of George Harrison, and Olivia's son Dhani Harrison in attendance. It is situated on Viðey Island in Kollafjörður Bay near Reykjavík, Iceland.
The words "Imagine Peace" are carved into the white stone base in 24 languages. In the top of the tower are 15 searchlights, with prisms that act as mirrors and reflect the columns of light 4,000 meters vertically into the sky.
5. The triumphal arch called "Arco della Pace" (Arch of Peace) stands in the center of "Piazza Sempione" (Simplon Square), in which Italian city?

Answer: Milan

Built in 1807 by Italian architect Luigi Cagnola, the neoclassical 80-foot high and 78-foot wide Arch of Peace dominates the square adjacent to Simplon Park, the main city park in Milan. The arch itself has Corinthian columns and is decorated with bas-reliefs and statues honoring major events in both Italian and European history.
The Arch of Peace now stands near to where "Porta Giovia" (Jupiter's Gate), a gate in the city's walls dating back to Roman times, once stood.
6. Completed in 1992, "Reconciliation: The Peacekeeping Monument" can be found near the National Gallery in which capital city?

Answer: Ottawa, Canada

Located at the intersection of Mackenzie Avenue and Sussex Drive, just north of the American Embassy in Ottawa, Canada, The Peacekeeping Monument honors Canada's role in international peacekeeping. Designed by award-winning Canadian architect Gregory Henriquez, the monument features three peacekeepers, two men and one woman.
The monument was featured on the 1995 Canadian $1 coin. August 9 is officially "National Peacekeepers' Day" in Canada, a remembrance of Canadian veterans of peacekeeping missions. It is observed annually on the nearest Sunday to August 9.
7. Proposed in 1910 and completed four years later, the "Morokulien" monument (pictured) commemorates a century of peace between which two countries?

Answer: Norway and Sweden

Although the Norwegian constitution was adopted in May 1814, the official union between Norway and Sweden was not formally dissolved until June 1905. The Nordic Peace Congress held in Stockholm in 1910 decided that 100 years of peace between the two countries should be commemorated with a monument.

A 6-hectare site on the border between Norway and Sweden was set aside and the pictured monument was completed in 1914. The name "Morokulien" is an amalgamation of the Norwegian and Swedish for 'fun' (moro and kul, respectively).
8. The "Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial" (pictured) commemorating the lasting peace between Britain, Canada, and the United States following the War of 1812 is located in which U.S. state?

Answer: Ohio

One of the most significant naval battles during the War of 1812 between the United States and Great Britain, the Battle of Lake Erie (also called the Battle of Put-in-Bay) took place on September 10, 1813. Fought near the village of Put-in-Bay on South Bass Island, which lies just three miles into Lake Erie off the northern coast of Ohio, the U.S. fleet commanded by Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry, delivered a decisive victory.
Established under F.D. Roosevelt as "Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial National Monument" in 1936, it was renamed and designated a National Monument in 1972. Located in Put-in-Bay, the nearest city is Sandusky on the Ohio mainland.
The monument itself consists of a 352-foot tall Doric column, which is the world's tallest column of this type. It is also one of the tallest monuments in the U.S. -- only the Washington Monument, the gateway Arch in Saint Louis and San Jacinto Monument in Houston are higher.
9. The "Patriots Peace Memorial" (pictured at night) is one of the world's most spectacular monuments to fallen heroes. In which southern U.S. city is it located?

Answer: Louisville KY

The Patriots Peace Memorial was dedicated on Veterans Day in 2002 in the city of Louisville, Kentucky. The monument consists of a hollow cube with brick walls, but a solid brick is removed from the wall and replaced with a glass brick etched with the name of the fallen service person. By day, light shines into the monument through the glass bricks, and by night light shines out. Each beam of light serves to remind visitors of the freedom bought and safeguarded by the brave men and women commemorated here. The memorial honors members from all branches of the armed services who have died in the line of duty outside of declared hostile action.

As of 2007, 421 patriots who gave their lives for their country since the end of the Vietnam War had been enshrined here.
10. The "Island of Ireland Peace Park" (pictured) commemorates soldiers from Ireland who died, were wounded or missing during world War I. In which European country can you visit this monument?

Answer: Belgium

Unveiled on Armistice Day in 1998, the Island of Ireland Peace Park (also known as the Irish Tower or the Irish Peace Park) is located in the city of Messines, near Ypres in Belgium. The park is located adjacent to the site of the Battle of Messines Ridge, which was fought over a week in the middle of June 1917. Troops from Britain, Canada, Australia and New Zealand scored a decisive victory for the allies under the command of British Field Marshal Douglas Haig.

The British contingent here contained many Irish soldiers, who fought side by side irrespective of religion against the common enemy.

The Battle of Messines was a prelude to the much larger Third Battle of Ypres, which began a month later.
