Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Our first trip is to the land my ancestors came from. It is a republic with a beautiful white and blue flag. It has both four seasons and the "midnight sun". In the north, you might see an animal here that is familiar to many people at a certain season. What country is this?

Answer: Finland

The Republic of Finland has two official languages, Finnish and Swedish. To pronounce Finnish words and names, put the emphasis on the first syllable.

In the northern part of Finland you will find Lapland, with its interesting and colorful people and their most important animal, the reindeer - familiar for its associations with Christmas.

"Finlandia" by Finnish composer Jean Sibelius is a patriotic piece of music that is very much revered by the Finnish people.
2. We have already been on a trip to Central America. We spent time in what is known as the most peaceful country in the area, as it has no army. The native people are called "tikos/ticas" by the non-natives, who are plentiful. Pre-Columbian art is found in the country including the huge nearly perfectly round stone spheres, symbolic of the country. Where did we go?

Answer: Costa Rica

The stone spheres began to be found in the 1930s all over Costa Rica - but mostly in the Diquis delta and on Isla del Cano. Some can weigh several tons, but though they have been studied, not much is known for sure. On back roads you can see another example of Costa Rican culture - huge oxen pulling the gaily painted hand-made carts, which are also a national symbol.
3. In this country we had a most interesting food - haggis. For this dish, you take the organs of a sheep, mix with oatmeal, suet, onions and salt, and cook in the sheep's stomach - pretty good eating! Another interesting thing we learned when visiting is that the national animal of this country is that mythical beast, the unicorn. As you can see, it is a very interesting country to visit and learn about. What country do we mean?

Answer: Scotland

Haggis is known as the national dish of Scotland. Haggis may not sound very tasty, but actually it is a savory dish and very popular. It is traditionally served with neeps and tatties (turnips and potatoes).

The unicorn and the red lion are the national animals of Scotland - nothing wrong with a fictional animal as a symbol! If you read the myths of Scotland you will find stories of unicorns and other creatures, such as the Loch Ness Monster. We know the latter is true, for I took a picture of it at Loch Ness - I did! I swear! Why doesn't anyone believe me, except my traveling companions?
4. This country might be the one we trip up in, we're afraid. Oh well, we are brave and want to go to this northern country because it is so rich in culture. We especially want to see the land of Pushkin and other famous writers, as well as the Bolshoi Ballet. We also want to buy some real nesting dolls (known as Matryoshka dolls). Where will we find all this, and more?

Answer: Russia

Matryoska dolls aren't as old a custom as you might think. They only go back to 1890 when they were first designed, carved and painted by artists who were inspired by a doll from Japan.

Literary figures are numerous. Russian authors were greatly honored and appreciated by their country and world-wide. Some of the more well-known are Gorky, Tolstoy, Dostoyevsky - the list goes on and on. Russia's classical composers, ballet, architecture, and other cultural pursuits have always been outstanding.
5. Our next trip is to a European country known for its fine wines and culinary delights! However, we are unlikely to see any onion sellers riding bicycles and wearing berets as they seem to be a thing of the past. Where am I?

Answer: France

France is a wonderfully diverse country. From the bright lights of Paris, with its museums, art galleries, historical monuments and bustling cafes and bars to the sleepy rural Provencal lavender fields in the Southwest.
France has a population of 65,350,000 (census 2012) and is the third largest country in Europe.
The Ministry of Culture was created in 1959 to help preserve French Culture and the many historical monuments which is why, perhaps, France has the most tourists in Western Europe.
There are also thirty eight sites in France which are on the World Heritage List.
6. Let's take a trip to a magical place in South Africa called Hogsback. It is sometimes claimed to have partially inspired the setting of a trilogy of novels by what South African-born novelist?

Answer: J. R. R. Tolkien

Nestled in a remote village in the Eastern Cape Region of South Africa, in the Amatola mountain range is Hogsback.

As stated, it is only rumoured to be the setting of J.R.R. Tolkien's trilogy. Many people who have been there have marvelled at how it could have been, since Tolkien moved to the UK at the age of 3 years old and it is likely that he would not have remembered much about Hogsback.

The popular belief among the Xhosa people who live in the area is that the name Hogsback came from the three peaks that overlook the village and when seen from a certain angle resemble a hog's back.

If you are into backpacking then this is the one place you should make an effort to see. There are literally hundreds of hiking and mountain biking trails. The most popular being The Labrynth at the Edge, The Three Waterfall Trail, Madonna and Child Falls and the absolutely breathtaking 39 Step Falls.
7. A trip to Ganga Talao, considered as sacred as the Ganges River in India, is well worth visiting. On which Indian Ocean island would you find this lake?

Answer: Mauritius

Ganga Talao is a natural lake which is in a crater of an extinct volcano, on the beautiful island of Mauritius.

Each year during February and March, on Maha Shivaratri, also known as "Great Night of Lord Shiva", thousands of pilgrims dressed in white (symbolising purity) walk kilometres to the Ganga Talao carrying a Kanwar, which is a wooden arch covered with flowers and mirrors.

Holy water called "Jal" is collected from the lake which is then offered in the temple of their locality.
8. Our next trip is to Zimbabwe, where you will find "Mosi-oa-Tunya" (The Smoke That Thunders). What is the common English name of this magnificant sight?

Answer: Victoria Falls

Victoria Falls were given that name by the missionary David Livingstone after Queen Victoria, and are known by the local Matabele people as "the smoke that thunders".

This waterfall is situated on the Zambezi River at the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe and can be accessed from both countries via border posts.

Victoria falls is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is Zambia/Zimbabwe's main tourist attraction.
9. We next fly northwest over the Atlantic Ocean to a huge country, to the very western edge of the continent. Here we find the province of British Columbia, and its beautiful island in the south-west named after a bold explorer. Vancouver Island has B.C.'s provincial capital. The city has a queen's name and it is indeed fit for a queen with its Victorian Era architecture and fabulous gardens. What country are we visiting now?

Answer: Canada

The Fairmont Empress Hotel in Victoria, the provincial capitol of British Columbia, is as famous for its afternoon teas as for its fabulous Victorian architecture. We will have tea, then go to the equally famous Butchart Gardens,
one of the most visited attractions in Canada. The wonderful flowers and the local fauna flourish in the mild climate.

Some more of the many attractions of the island are Craigdarroch Castle, the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, Chinatown Victoria and oh so many more.
10. Ole! We have arrived at the last stop on our trip. Here we find evidence of several pre-Columbian civilizations, including the Toltec, Aztec and Mayan. We want to see ruins of the Mayan culture, so we head for the Yucatan Penninsula. In what country will we see these wonderful ancient things?

Answer: Mexico

The prehistoric city of Chichen-Itza was a great Mayan center of civilization
on the Yucatan Penninsula, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The architecture of the Mayan monuments, such as the Great Ball Court and the Temple of the Warriors, are heralded for their proportions and their beautiful sculptures. Perhaps the greatest of all attractions is the Stepped Pyramid of Kukulkan, El Castillo (The Castle).

So many things to see in Mexico!
