Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Tupperware product was introduced to the USA in 1949. What was the name of the person who developed this new, innovative product?

Answer: Earl Tupper

Earl Tupper was born in Berlin, New Hampshire, USA in 1907. He worked for the DuPont Chemical Company where he used leftover pieces of polyethylene (plastic) to mould lightweight, non-breakable containers.
Rick Goings was the Chairman and CEO of Tupperware Brands Corp as at 2009, Brownie Wise was instrumental in convincing Earl Tupper to sell his product through a direct marketing strategy, and Mila Pond was the first person to hold a Tupperware party in England, in October 1960.
2. When was the Tupperware Plastic Company founded?

Answer: 1938

The Tupperware Plastic Company was founded in 1938 but the Tupper Plastics were not introduced into stores until 1946. 1948 was when the first Tupperware party was held.
3. The Tupperware airtight seal prevented food from drying out, wilting or losing flavor. What type of product was the inspiration for this unique seal?

Answer: Paint can

An inverted paint can rim was the inspiration for the Tupperware seal. This unique seal was the first to be airtight and, in certain situations, liquid-tight.
4. 1951 was a turning point for the Tupperware company. What happened that was so special for the Tupperware name?

Answer: Products were taken off store shelves and only sold via party plan

In 1951, Tupperware products were taken off store shelves and offered only through Tupperware demonstrations held in the home (i.e. party plan). Retail outlet sales were not doing well as the product needed to be demonstrated to consumers so they had an understanding of how the containers worked.
5. Where are the headquarters for Tupperware Brands Corporation?

Answer: Orlando, Florida

Outside the Tupperware headquarters in Orlando, Florida you can see the 'Fountain of Friendship' a gift from Tupperware Australia/New Zealand. The 'Fountain of Friendship' is also used as the logo for Tupperware Brands.
6. In the mid 2000s, one of Tupperware's children's toys (which most people don't even realise is Tupperware) turned 40. Which toy was this?

Answer: Shape-O

The Build-A-Train, Busy Blocks, and Children's Mixing Set are all Tupperware toys released by Tupperware. Build-A-Train consists of several pieces all held together with a large bolt and nut going through the length of the train. Busy Blocks are hinged blocks that can be linked together to create many different things, only limited by the imagination of the person playing with them. The Mini-Mix-It Children's mixing set has been released several times containing child-sized pieces similar to those used by an adult in the kitchen.

The Shape-O is a toy with several plastic shapes that can be pushed into the centre of the ball through their matching shape cut-out on the surface of the ball. To remove the shapes, the ball pulls apart around the centre using an inset handle on each half of the ball.

The Shape-O is the only one of these toys continuously seen in Tupperware catalogues since its introduction.
7. Tupperware is sold in nearly 100 countries around the world. Which country was in 2009 the biggest consumer of Tupperware?

Answer: Germany

Germany has, for many years, been the top consumer of Tupperware in the world. The USA holds second position, then France, Mexico and Russia rounding out the top five consumers. The Australia/New Zealand region is sixth on the list of biggest consumers of Tupperware.

The only regions not having a large influence of the Tupperware name are Africa and Middle Eastern countries.
8. There is something else that makes the Tupperware brand and product unique and special amongst its competitors. What is this remarkable offering?

Answer: Lifetime replacement guarantee

The Tupperware lifetime replacement guarantee covers parts that are split, cracked, warped or peeling but does not cover parts that have been damaged through misuse of the product - such as being melted or impact damage.

For replacement parts that are no longer in production, a customer will be offered a 'credit' for the final retail value of that product to spend on a Tupperware item of their choice, although the entire damaged product must be returned to Tupperware.

The lifetime guarantee applies to most items, with only some exceptions - such as metal or 'wearing' parts of a particular product. In this case, a 'Q guarantee' exists whereby the product has a 30-day replacement guarantee relating to manufacturer's faults.

Some countries have legal restrictions on lifetime guarantees so other options are offered, such as the 10 year guarantee in the UK and Ireland.
9. These airtight containers, which are known as 'Space Savers' in the UK and 'Kompakt-System' in Germany, are known by a different name in the USA and Australia. What is the alternative name for these containers?

Answer: Modular Mates

Modular Mates are oval, rectangular and square shaped containers, coming in six different heights and specifically designed to stack with and on top of each other. The airtight seal helps to preserve the quality of food stored within the container and the modularity of the containers are designed to save space in the kitchen, specifically the pantry.

The FridgeSmart, as they are known in the USA, UK and Australia (also known as PrimaKlima in Germany) are for use in the fridge for fresh fruit and vegetables. A unique 'air vent' system helps to preserve the freshness of the contents. UltraPro (Australia, but known as UltraPlus in Germany) are plastic casserole containers with heat resistant properties safe for use in both microwaves and conventional ovens. Rock 'n' Serve (USA and Australia, also known as CrystalPlus in the UK) containers are designed for freezing and re-heating food in a microwave. Containers can be placed in the microwave to re-heat food directly from the freezer or refrigerator with the consumer only needing to open the specially designed steam vent to prevent any 'explosive' microwave mishaps.
10. Tupperware have introduced a 'Chain of Confidence' online community where women can join in discussions with one another about the importance of friendship and self-confidence derived from such friendships. In 2007, which celebrity was announced as being spokesperson for this campaign?

Answer: Brooke Shields

As a part of the 'Chain of Confidence' program, Tupperware has donated over one million dollars to Boys & Girls Clubs of America to sponsor SMART Girls. SMART Girls is dedicated to promoting self-confidence in 8-17 year-old girls.
