Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. UCSB's mascot is the gaucho, but what is a gaucho?

Answer: South American cowboy

This replaced the old mascot, a roadrunner.
2. In the period between 1998 and 2005 UCSB became a very decorated school with 5 Nobel Prize winners on staff. In which category though, did UCSB not produce a winner?

Answer: medicine

The winners were Finn Kydland for economics, Alan Heeger and Walter Kohn in chemistry and David Gross and Herbert Kroemer for physics. I would tell you what they do but I don't really understand it myself.
3. UCSB, like any other college, has had its share of famous alumni. Although all these celebrities have Santa Barbara ties, one never attended the University. Who is that?

Answer: Oprah Winfrey

Brian Shaw played for the Boston Celtics, Miami Heat and the LA Lakers in the NBA
Michael Douglas is a world renowned actor.
Robert Ballard was the man who rediscovered the Titanic.
Oprah lives in nearby Montecito and has spoken at the school, but attended Tennessee State University
4. UCSB and the adjoining community of Isla Vista have been a hotbed for musical talent. A number of successful musical acts have come out of the area. One singer payed tribute to his past with the lyrics: "Well I was eating lunch at the D. L. G. When this little girl came and she sat next to me" Who sang this?

Answer: Jack Johnson

The D.L.G. in question stood for De La Guerra dining commons and the song was written as a tribute to his wife.
5. Although UCSB is not known for its athletic prowess, it has some memorable sports memories. In 2004 the men's soccer team made a magical run to the national championship and lost 3-2 on penalty kicks in double overtime . What school finally beat them to win the championship?

Answer: Indiana

UCSB beat Virgina Commonwealth 4-1 and Duke 5-0 in the quarter and semifinals to advance to the championship. UCSB's only previous national championship win was in Men's water polo. The Women's basketball team has also been a perennial winner with a streak of 10 plus straight Big West championships in the 1990's to 2000's.
6. UCSB has a very rabid group of fans known as the Gaucho Locos. These rowdy hooligans have been known to get under the skin of referees and opponents alike. Although the event precedes the official inception of the Locos, what event earned the team a technical, caused an over 15 minute delay and earned UCSB an unofficial ban from ESPN for a few years?

Answer: Numerous tortillas thrown onto the court.

Although not a personal witness to the event, being in junior high at the time, this legend lives on and is still referenced by the Gaucho faithful. Despite all this UCSB managed to still beat the Pacific Tigers.
7. One thing our fans love to claim is that our mascot is rather unique. The Gauchos Locos have even coined a special phrase for him "Fur free and uninflated since 1992". What is this special mascot's name?

Answer: Phantom of the Dome

One of the most interesting mascots out there because he doesn't just walk around in a big suit. He mostly wears an old school gauchos jersey and goggles when he entertains. He employs skits, acrobatic stunts and even leads the crowd in cheers and song.
8. In the 1970's UCSB was like many other universities, in that its students questioned authority and protested the Vietnam War. On February 25, 1970 the students took it a step farther and incited a riot that culminated in the burning of Isla Vista's only bank. What was that bank's name?

Answer: Bank of America

Since that time the former site of that bank has been a brewery, a pool hall and most recently a lecture hall.
9. The land that UCSB is situated on next to Isla Vista has undergone numerous changes over the years. Which of these has not been a former usage for UCSB's land?

Answer: Prohibition era still

The only one of the three former occupants who has left noticeable traces on the campus is the marines. Some of the oldest dorms are left over from their time, as well as a few classrooms. Other reminders of their presence include a giant t shape at Campus Point and what appear to be landing pads near there.
10. In 1992 Playboy magazine recognized UCSB as one of the best parties in the nation for what annual event?

Answer: Halloween

This is an event that it seems anyone who attends school on the west coast has heard of, much to the University's chagrin. Since that poll UCSB and the local police force has imposed certain, some would say draconian, measures to tame the event.
