Question 1 of 10
1. Many call signs are given when an aircrew member shares a last name with a celebrity. Two of our pilot friends, with the last names of "Gossett" and "Rawls", share the same call sign. Can you figure out their call sign from that clue? Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. Sometimes in the military, a service member will transition from one military branch to another (such as from the Marines to the Air Force). When this happens, that person will often be given a call sign to reflect their previous life in the other branch. So which of these would be a good call sign for someone switching from the Navy? Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. If you know a little about golf, you will probably figure this one out. One pilot we know has the last name of "Mulligan". What do you suppose his call sign was? Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. Sometimes a pilot will earn a call sign from some embarrassing moment in his flying career. For instance, one friend of ours declared from the cockpit that he was becoming Hypoxic, or in other words, becoming lightheaded from the lack of oxygen. The funny thing about this is that he was still On the Ground at the time! See if you can figure out his call sign, which is an acronym, from that situation (look for subtle hints above). Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. No doubt that pilots can spend as much time in the bar as they do in the air. One unfortunate friend of ours drank WAY too much Jeremiah Weed one night, and found himself later worshipping the porcelain god. What gross call sign do you suppose he earned that night? Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. More often than not a pilot's call sign will be some clever play of words based the pilot's last name. For instance, one friend's last name is "Holler", and has the call sign of "Hog"; together it makes "Hog Holler". So what would you guess is the call sign of the pilot we knew with the last name of "Newton"? Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. How about the call sign of the pilot we know whose last name is "Roosa"? Just try to find the combination that fits. Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. Can you guess at the call sign of our friend with the last name of "Barilla"? Sound out the choices with the last name to find the one that could quench your thirst. Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. Sometimes the call sign is obvious based on the aircrew member's last name. Our good friend with the last name of Parsons, has which call sign? Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. Clearly you've learned that a pilot isn't a pilot until he/she has earned themselves a good call sign. But when will a popcorn machine be a popcorn machine? Of course, when it earns a call sign. From the choices below, one of these was a nickname of a squadron popcorn machine - can you guess it? Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Many call signs are given when an aircrew member shares a last name with a celebrity. Two of our pilot friends, with the last names of "Gossett" and "Rawls", share the same call sign. Can you figure out their call sign from that clue?

Answer: Lou

Lou Gossett, Jr. is a well-known actor ("An Officer and a Gentleman") and Lou Rawls is a legendary R&B singer.
2. Sometimes in the military, a service member will transition from one military branch to another (such as from the Marines to the Air Force). When this happens, that person will often be given a call sign to reflect their previous life in the other branch. So which of these would be a good call sign for someone switching from the Navy?

Answer: Squid

A squid, of course, being a completely aquatic animal, is a perfect name for someone linked to a life on the ocean! Another name sometimes given for a former naval aviator is "Flipper".
3. If you know a little about golf, you will probably figure this one out. One pilot we know has the last name of "Mulligan". What do you suppose his call sign was?

Answer: Slice

A "mulligan" in golf is basically a "do-over" - if you hit your shot poorly, you can take a "mulligan" and try it again. So to "slice" in golf is to hit the ball in a curving trajectory - not intentional and usually a poor shot. So, to sum up, if you "slice", you may end up taking a "mulligan"!

Answer: HOG

HOG = Hypoxic On Ground. BOG is another call sign from a pilot we know who declared that he was blind (unable to see his flight lead) while still on the ground.
5. No doubt that pilots can spend as much time in the bar as they do in the air. One unfortunate friend of ours drank WAY too much Jeremiah Weed one night, and found himself later worshipping the porcelain god. What gross call sign do you suppose he earned that night?

Answer: Chunks

Hopefully I don't really need to explain this one. :)

Answer: Fig

"Fig" Newton -- a Fig Newton is a delicious fig filled cookie made by Nabisco.
7. How about the call sign of the pilot we know whose last name is "Roosa"? Just try to find the combination that fits.

Answer: Kanga

"Kanga" Roosa -- I love that one. Simple and clever.
8. Can you guess at the call sign of our friend with the last name of "Barilla"? Sound out the choices with the last name to find the one that could quench your thirst.

Answer: Sass

"Sass" Barilla = sasparilla, or sarsparilla, which is a drink very similar in flavor to root beer.
9. Sometimes the call sign is obvious based on the aircrew member's last name. Our good friend with the last name of Parsons, has which call sign?

Answer: Preacher

A "parson" is a member of the clergy, like a minister, from which follows "Preacher".

Answer: Cornholio

Cornholio was the name of a character's alter ego from the animated cartoon "Beavis and Butthead". And who says pilots are uncultured?
