Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which ship, the only one of its class, was the longest-serving aircraft carrier in the U.S. Navy when she retired in 2012?

Answer: USS Enterprise

USS Enterprise (CVN-65) was the first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier in the world when she entered service in 1962. At the time, Enterprise was also the longest naval vessel ever built (1,123 ft/342 m), a record that still stood in 2014.
2. The BRP Gregorio del Pilar (PF-15) was acquired by the Philippines from which U.S. agency?

Answer: Coast Guard

The Gregorio del Pilar is the ex-USCGC Hamilton, the lead ship of the U.S. Coast Guard's Secretary/Hero Class of High Endurance Cutters, launched in 1965. She was sold to the Philippines per the terms of the Excess Defense Articles Act and the Foreign Assistance Act.
3. HNoMS Skjold (P960) is a missile frigate from which NATO country? "HNoMS" is the English designation for warships of this country; in the native language it is rendered as "KNM".

Answer: Norway

Ships of the Royal Norwegian Navy have the prefix "KNM" for Kongelig Norske Marine in their native language. In English, the ships are prefixed as "His/Her Norwegian Majesty's Ship" or "HNoMS". The Skjold and her sisters are very fast missile-shooting corvettes that use stealth technology.
4. The U.S. Coast Guard operates two ships of this class, the largest ships of their type owned by the U.S. government. What is their primary mission?

Answer: Ice breaking

The USCGCs Polar Sea and Polar Star are 399 ft/122 m in length and displace over 13,000 tons full-load. They are the only heavy icebreakers in the U.S. military, designed to operate in the thick Antarctic ice. A third icebreaker, USCGC Healy, is smaller and designed for the challenging but less-demanding conditions in the Arctic.
5. Which hull form is illustrated here by USNS Effective (T-AGOS 21)?

Answer: SWATH

Small-waterplane-area twin hull (SWATH) is designed to maximize vessel stability, especially at high speed and in high seas, by minimizing the hull cross-section at the surface of the sea. Advantages include a large, broad, stable deck; disadvantages are deeper draft, complex hull form and higher maintenance costs.
6. What is the name of this type of U.S. navy warship?

Answer: Littoral Combat Ship (LCS)

USS Independence (LCS-2) is the lead ship of this particular design of the Littoral Combat Ship; one other exists as of 2014 and a total of 12 are planned. USS Freedom (LCS-1) is a traditional monohull design, while the Independence-class are trimarans.
7. What is the rather unusual power source for the Type-212 submarine, built by a German yard and in service in the German and Italian navies?

Answer: Fuel Cell

The Type-212 have diesel engines but also use an air-independent fuel cell which produces enough electrical power for weeks of silent submerged operation. Fuel cell technology is in use and is being developed for automobiles, power generators, motorcycles and even aircraft.
8. This ex-Soviet aircraft carrier was sold and became the first operational carrier in a country whose navy is known by the acronym "PLAN". Which country is this?

Answer: China

The People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) is the maritime component of the People's Republic of China. The ex-Varyag is now the Liaoning (CV-16). The Chinese use this ship for training in aircraft operations while they reportedly are building their own carriers based on this design.

The Chinese previously bought other deactivated carriers but did not put them into service, instead studying their design.
9. Which nation, once an innovator in carrier-borne aircraft tactics, now has only helicopter carriers (or helicopter destroyers) as their largest combat vessel for self-defense?

Answer: Japan

The Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) was formed after WW2 and the scrapping of the Imperial Japanese Navy. The JDS Hyûga (pictured) is, in 2014, the largest ship in the JMSDF; a larger helicopter carrier, the Izumo-class, is scheduled to enter service in 2015.
10. The pictured vessel (shown in the livery of a different nation), is the largest vessel in the Coast Guard (Navy) of which island nation off the west coast of Africa?

Answer: São Tomé and Príncipe

São Tomé and Príncipe (STP) is in the Gulf of Guinea; all of the other choices are on or off the east coast of Africa. STP consists of two main islands, and the Coast Guard/Navy vessels try to keep other nations from taking the natural resources from their territorial waters and Exclusive Economic Zone.
