Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. French surrender at Dienbienphu, allowing the Viet Minh to take control of North Vietnam:

This happened in 1954. Eisenhower truly attempted to keep out of Vietnam, which he considered a potential quagmire.
2. Upton Sinclair's 'The Jungle', was published, leading to the passage of the Meat Inspection Act:

Answer: Theodore Roosevelt

This happened in 1906. 'The Jungle' tells the haunting and disgusting tale of a meat factory worker, Jurgis Rudkus. Teddy even became a vegetarian after reading this book.
3. The Ku Klux Klan was founded by former Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest:

Answer: Andrew Johnson

Happened in 1866. The KKK truly represented the anti-North sentiment held by many Southerners. Unfortunately, they went further and used violent deadly tactics on freed blacks.
4. Who was the American president when John Brown lead his famous raid on the US arsenal at Harpers Ferry, VA, where he was captured by Robert E. Lee?

Answer: James Buchanan

This all happened in 1859. Brown, who earlier had become famous for his Pottawatomie Massacre, was eventually executed. Northern abolitionists used this to make him a martyr.
5. Aaron Burr killed Alexander Hamilton at Weehawken, NJ, in a duel:

Answer: Thomas Jefferson

This occurred in 1804. Burr attempted to run for Governor of N.Y., but Hamilton's criticisms of Burr brought him down. Angry at Hamilton, Burr challenged Hamilton to the infamous duel.
6. America started the Mexican War, where quick victory was achieved and major land cessions by Mexico were made:
