Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the first true (not interim) attack helicopter developed for the U.S.?

Answer: AH-56 Cheyenne

The armed UH-1 was a modified utility helicopter and the AH-1 was designed only as an interim solution until a suitable attack helicopter could be found. The AH-56 was developed in 1967 to be the first attack helicopter and 375 were ordered. The order was later canceled due to a crash and the Army had to wait until 1982 for the AH-64.
2. What special equipment did the B-1A have to protect the crew?

Answer: all of these

The B-1A used a crew escape capsule, which was also employed on the F-111, because normal ejection at high speed would be fatal. The white color scheme protected the crew and airframe from the heat of a nuclear blast by reflecting the heat.
3. What was the fuel originally planned for the XB-70?

Answer: Ethyl borane

Ethyl borane was originally planned to be the fuel used by the XB-70 but it was found to be too expensive so they used JP-6 instead.
4. As of 2010, what is the largest production aircraft in the world?

Answer: Airbus A380

The Spruce Goose has the largest wingspan of any aircraft built and the AN-225 is the longest but neither of them are production aircraft.

The Airbus A380 has a wingspan of 261.6ft, length of 240ft, height of 79ft, and empty weight of 610,000lbs.

Until 2005, when the Airbus A380 was introduced, the record was held by the AN-124 Condor, with a wingspan of 240ft. 9in., length of 226ft. 7in., height of 68ft. 2in., and empty weight of 385,000lbs.
5. Why can the Avenger cannon on the A-10 only fire in 2-second bursts?

Answer: all of these

The cannon can only fire in two-second bursts with 1 minute to cool down between bursts. The Avenger cannon can fire all of its ammunition in 10 two-second bursts. The recoil of the cannon counteracts the thrust of the engines and therefore can only be fired in very short bursts.
6. True or False: The VC-25A Presidential transports are always called Air Force One.

Answer: False

Any aircraft flown by the Air Force that is carrying the President of the U.S. is know as Air Force One but when the President is not on it, it reverts back to its original call sign.
7. What helicopter set a world speed record of 229 m.p.h.?

Answer: Mi-24 Hind

The stub wings of the Hind interfere with the downdraft of the rotors but when in flight provide most of the lift leaving the Hind's 57-foot rotor to provide mostly forward momentum. In the 70's the Hind made its record-breaking flight but the exact date is sketchy due to the Cold War.
8. What U.S. aircraft is known as "BUFF"?

Answer: B-52 Stratofortress

The term "BUFF" stands for Big Ugly Fat Fellow (the polite version, anyway). By contrast, the A-7 is the SLUF (Short Little Ugly Fellow). The A-10 is known as the "Warthog" or "Hog", and the C-5 has several nicknames, of which "Fat Albert" is the most repeatable.
9. Which of these aircraft was the least expensive?

Answer: C-17

The cost of USAF aircraft, per data from www.af.mil: 1. B-2 = $1.1B 2. B-1B = $283M 3. E-3 = $270M 4. E-8 Joint Stars = $244M 5. C-17 = $236M

10. True or False: Taiwan imports all of its combat aircraft from other nations.

Answer: False

The AIDC Ching-Kuo is the first indigenous aircraft to Taiwan.
11. True of False: A B-52 can reach any target in the world in less than 18 hours.

Answer: True

A B-52's cruising speed is 660 m.p.h. and has a range of 8,500 miles.
12. How many aircraft can the Il-78M Midas refuel at once?

Answer: 3

Developed from Russia's AWACS aircraft, the Il-76 Candid, the Il-78M is a three-point in-flight refueling tanker.
13. Where was the RAH-66 Comanche's maiden flight?

Answer: West Palm Beach, Florida

The Comanche's maiden flight was on January 4,1996 in West Palm Beach, Florida and lasted 36 minutes.
14. True or False: The Tu-22M Backfire strategic bomber can be outfitted for STOL missions.

Answer: True

For short landings the Tu-22M can deploy a large brake parachute and for short take-offs it can carry external rocket packs.
15. Which of these were never flown at Dryden Flight Research Center?

Answer: YF-23

Dryden is located at Edwards Air Force Base in the Mojave Desert of California. The Boeing 727 was used for vortex study, the P-3D was a shuttle tile flight tests fixture, and the SR-71 was used in many experiments.
16. What is the "Longbow" in the AH-64D Longbow Apache?

Answer: The name of the radar system

The Longbow radar allows the Apache to hide from the enemy and attack at will.
17. True of False: The CH-46 Sea Knight is vulnerable to small arms fire.

Answer: True

One of the weaknesses of the Sea Knight is that it has very little armor.
18. Some helicopters can be refueled in flight.

Answer: True

The MH-47E Chinook was the first helicopter to have an in-flight refueling probe. At 36 feet, it was the longest probe on any aircraft.
19. What name used to be used by the helicopter manufacturing group owned by Airbus?

Answer: Eurocopter

The history of the Eurocopter Group is complicated, but it originally took that name in 1992 following the merger of two other helicopter divisions. It was renamed Airbus Helicopters in January 2014.
20. Which of these have the biggest radar cross-section?

Answer: Three-ton parcel truck

The radar cross section of a three-ton parcel truck is twice that of a 747 due to the flat edges and 90 degree angles.
21. What is the only rocket-powered aircraft to fly in combat?

Answer: Me 163 Komet

The Komet was a German aircraft in World War II. It used upward firing projectiles triggered by photocells detecting the shadow of a bomber.

24. True or False: Wilbur Wright refused to fly on Sundays.

Answer: True

The Smithsonian refused to acknowledge the Wrights' achievement until the early 1940s.
25. And, an easy one to end with. Who was the first person to make a successful supersonic flight?

Answer: Chuck Yeager

The rocket that powered the X-1 was only able to supply power for 5 minutes.
