Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What am I saying in Irish here? 'Is maith liom mo geansai gorm'.

Answer: I like my blue jumper (sweatshirt)

'Is maith liom mo geansai gorm' can be pronounced as, iss moth lum mo ganzee gurum. A jumper could also be sweatshirt.

The key to the phrase, if you want to use it, is 'Is maith liom mo', or 'I like my' , and you can add other nouns to this to say what you like in Irish.

I really do like my blue jumper. I think I'll call it Steve! lol
2. What does this mean? 'Sneachta buí'.

Answer: yellow snow

'Sneachta buí' can be pronounced as, snock-ta bwee.

Word of warning; never eat the yellow snow! lol
3. 'Tá mé ag dul go dtí an leithris'. What have I just said in Irish?

Answer: I am going to the toilet

'Tá mé ag dul go dtí an leithris' can be pronounced as, "Taw may egg dull gu dee on lethuris".

There's a great new phrase to wow your friends with at the Christmas party; but just make sure you use the lavatory when you do! lol
4. I'm thirsty for some 'Uisce bheatha'. What am I thirsty for?

Answer: Whiskey

'Uisce' is the Irish word for water. 'Bheatha' is a derivative from 'brea' or good. So whiskey is good water! 'Uisce bheatha' can be pronounced ishka vath-ha.

If you have never heard the expression, to 'Irish up something', one of its meanings is to add whiskey to something; as in coffee or tea. Ah, sure the Irish will use it to 'Irish up' just about anything! lol
5. There is new superhero in town. All I know is that they call him 'An Gruaig'. What would he be called in English?

Answer: 'The Hair'

'An Gruaig' can be pronounced as, On Grew-ig.

In college, a friend of mine grew dreadlocks that looked exactly like a tarantula. Eventually, he snipped them off and the mysterious 'An Gruaig' was born! Evil doers; beware the might of this fearless and dandruff-less hero!
6. There is a new superheroine in town. She is known as 'An Tabac Piopa'. What on earth is that in English I ask?

Answer: 'The Tobacco Pipe'

'An Tabac Piopa' is roughly pronounced as, On taback peeopa.

What's that up in the sky? Is it a bird, is it a plane? No, it's 'The Tobacco Pipe', a superheroine that defeats enemies with her powerful smoking pipe! I have a feeling Marvel comics won't be calling me up to buy the rights! lol
7. 'Bhí an coinín ag caint leis an ceapaire'. I may check my eyes as this doesn't happen everyday. What illogical sentence did I write?

Answer: The rabbit was talking to the sandwich.

'Bhí an coinín ag caint leis an ceapaire' can be roughly pronounced as, Vee on Kunyeen egg coin-t lesh on kiapair.

I wonder what a rabbit might say to a sandwich, or why? Perhaps the sandwich has updoc in it!

I wonder if anyone fell for my silly, 'What's up doc?' prank!
8. I have been secretly working on an Irish screenplay for 'Rocky XIII'. In my screenplay, Rocky will come out of retirement to fight a 'scamall'. What will he be fighting against?

Answer: A cloud

Rocky has been played on the silver screen by Sylvester Stallone. I can see the tag-line now for this installment; 'Yo, the sky is the limit'. lol

'Scamall' can be pronounced as skaw-mill.
9. My two friends Amy and Sherm were doing something involving a 'liathroid' and a 'thoin' last night. What is the most likely thing they were doing?

Answer: Amy kicked a ball at Sherm's backside.

'Liathroid' (pronounced roughly as leeth-road) is a ball, specifically when dealing with one used in sport. One's 'thoin' is their backside.

Who knows; maybe they have done the other things too! lol
10. I have a pet named Harry. He is a mad, mad, mad 'madra'. What animal is he?

Answer: A dog

'Madra' can be pronounced as, Mawdra.

Did I mention he is mad? lol

We also have a dog named Sally; no prizes for the connection there!

Hopefully, now you can say loads of useless things in Irish.
