Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. You want to join the Foreign Legion. Where do you have to go in order to enlist?

Answer: France

If you have your mind made up and there is no talking you out of it, you must go to a recruitment center in France. The cost of getting there is paid by the applicant.
2. You arrive at the recruitment center. What are you required to give up?

Answer: Your ID and Passport

Upon arrival, every potential recruit is required to hand over his ID and passport. This is done in order to prevent desertion. Trust me, you will entertain this thought more than once during training.
3. During training, you will notice there are are men from many nations. Where does the largest group of men come from?

Answer: Germany

The French Foreign Legion has always attracted a large number of recruits from Germany. The end of WWII saw the greatest enlistment of Germans into the Legion. That included Germans who had served in the Waffen SS.
4. Before training begins, some men are escorted away without explanation. What could be the reason behind this?

Answer: Interpol

The French Foreign Legion is no longer a haven for scoundrels and people wanted by the law for serious crimes. Your name and prints are checked through Interpol and if you are wanted, the Legion is obliged to hand you over.
5. Your caporal chef (corporal) is a real mean cuss. Although he is English, what language will he speak to you in?

Answer: French only

You are required to learn French. It does not matter where you are from. Every recruit is required to learn enough French to be able to communicate with NCOs and peers. A dumb look will not work as your caporal chef is reading you the riot act.
6. You are having second thoughts about your decision. But you signed a contract. How many years is a standard contract for enlistment in the Foreign Legion?

Answer: Five years

A standard enlistment contract in the Legion is five years - five years of wondering about your decision and what you were thinking.
7. Which country will actually fine or imprison you for joining the French Foreign Legion?

Answer: Switzerland

Swiss nationals are not permitted to join the FFL because of the country's neutrality laws prohibiting service in a foreign army. Some still join but they sign up using a nom de guerre.
8. You will discover that the Legion has its traditions. What is the Legion's most celebrated day?

Answer: Camerone Day

Camerone Day is the most celebrated day in the Legion. On that day in 1863, 65 Legionnaires under Jean Danjou opposed over 2,000 Mexicans and fought until their ammo was expended and the remaining six survivors fixed bayonets and charged. It is not considered a victory. Only the utmost devotion to duty and and honorable way to die as soldiers.
9. What is the one thing the Legion will do for its members regardless of rank or status?

Answer: Protect your identity

There is only one thing the Foreign Legion will do for its members regardless of rank or status; they will protect your identity. If the press or any media is present and you do not wish to be photographed or to speak to them, they will honor that request.
10. You have just finished a grueling two day 50 mile march with full pack and weapon. What can you expect after the end of this ordeal?

Answer: To wear your kepi blanc

At this phase of your training, you will be allowed to wear the kepi blanc if you complete the march. After that, there is mountain training in the Pyrenees. Congratulations, you are almost a legionnaire! Welcome to the not so wonderful world of mean and foul NCOs, bad food, low pay, no leave and no escape.
