Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let's start out with some spokesmen (spokeswomen to follow). Who was the spokesman for Men's Warehouse?

Answer: George Zimmer

"You're going to like the way you look. I guarantee it" was George Zimmer's tagline for Men's Warehouse up until 2013. He had been executive chairman of the company when he (and his distinctive voice) was summarily fired with no explanation given. The commercials are not the same without him!
But all of the other choices were also famous spokesmen in their time:
Sy Sperling wasn't only the President of Hair Club for Men... "he was also a client".
Paul Macarelli would repeat over and over "Can you hear me now?".
Wayne McClaren was a 'Marlboro Man' who died of lung cancer in 1992.
2. As promised, who was the spokeswoman who said "Where's the beef?"?

Answer: Clara Peller

I'm sure many of you remember the old Wendy's commercial from 1984, with the old lady asking where the beef was. It was Clara Peller (1902-1987) whose famous line propelled Wendy's near the top of the fast food industry. You probably don't remember that Walter Mondale used the same slogan in his 1984 presidential campaign, but with far less success.
The others are also pitchwomen: Wendy Kaufman was "The Snapple Lady";
Candice Bergen did Sprint commercials in the 1990s (during her stint as "Murphy Brown") and was called "The Dime Lady" (how long ago that was!);
Alice Playten had her husband taking Alka-Seltzer for a 'giant' meatball.
3. Which company used the slogan "Diamonds are forever"?

Answer: De Beers

De Beers is a diamond company established in 1888. The De Beers Group of Companies is involved with the mining and trading of 'high-end' diamonds, and their founder was Cecil Rhodes. Their flagship store, appropriately enough, is located on posh 5th Avenue in New York City.
As for the other diamond purveyors, "He went to Jared", "Every Kiss begins with Kay" and Zales may be "The Diamond Store", but none of these has the history or prestige of De Beers.
4. Which company can claim the oldest (unchanged) corporate logo in the world?

Answer: Stella Artois

It all started with Sebastien Artois who became head brewer in a Belgium brewery which had been established in 1366. In 1717 he gave his name to the brewery and, in 1926, the festive beer known as 'Stella' (named for the Christmas Star) was launched.

The brew was initially only sold in the winter months, but eventually became available all year round and all around the world. The design of the logo includes the horn symbol of the original Den Hoorn brewery and the date of 1366. Quaker Oats was founded in 1901; Ovaltine was introduced in 1904; the original producer of Old Spice was William Schultz in 1934.
5. Did you know that the 'Michelin Man' actually has a name? What is it?

Answer: Bibendum

No, he's not the twin of the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man (from "Ghostbusters"). In fact, Bibendum goes back to the Lyon Exhibition of 1894 in France where the Michelin brothers showed off their trademark for the first time. The word bibendum comes from the Latin 'to drink" and the slogan was taken from "Nunc est bibendum" (Now is the time to drink), from one of Horace's Odes. I am, however, at a loss to explain the connection between drink and tires, since we are always told "never to drink and drive". The other choices are the Latin words for drive (coegi), wheels (rotae) and safety (salutem), all of which seem more appropriate.
6. Of the following products, which has the only US commercial that does NOT involve spelling the product name?

Answer: Maxwell House

The Kraft Foods Group focuses mainly on grocery products, having merged with Heinz on July 2, 2015. to form the world's fifth largest food and beverage company. Jello, Maxwell House and Oscar Mayer Weiners, are Kraft products, while Kelloggs Corn Flakes were developed by William Kellogg. As for their advertisements: "J-e-l-l - O" has a long track run; it started spelling itself on radio commercials from 1955. "K-e-double l-o-double good, Kellogg's best to you" was introduced in 1951 in the US under the name 'Sugar Frosted Flakes', and in 1973 a kid told us his "baloney has a first name (it's O-s-c-a-r)". Maxwell House is simply "good to the last drop".
7. For which US insurance company is Flo the perky saleslady?

Answer: Progressive

With a big smile, Flo gives you the 'price gun' and explains you have the "freedom to name your own price". She is always there with a helping hand or a kind word and, sometimes, her whole family is in the commercial (a la Eddie Murphy). Progressive Corporation was founded in 1937 and is one of the largest providers of car insurance in the country. They also insure RVs, motorcycles, boats and can provide home insurance as well.
Dennis Haysbert tells us "We're in good hands with Allstate";
State Farm has the Coneheads (from "SNL") doing "Jake from State Farm";
Farmers lets J.K. Simmons tell us what we MAY think we're insured for.
8. For whom is 'Poppin' Fresh' the spokesman, er, spokespastry?

Answer: Pillsbury Company

'Poppin' Fresh' is also known as "the Pillsbury Doughboy" (hee hee!). In 2001, Pillsbury was bought by their former rival, General Mills. Does anyone still remember the famous "Pillsbury Bake-Off", a cooking contest which used to be nationally televised from 1949 to 1976 (with the exception of 1965)? Do you believe that the company continues to hold the contest biennially? The only required ingredient in the earlier bake-offs was Pillsbury's BEST flour.
Cinnabon sells its baked goods in high traffic areas like airports and malls.
Entenmann's products are generally sold to supermarkets and other retailers.
Nabisco is headquartered in New Jersey and is a subsidiary of Mondelez.
9. Which carbonated beverage has the slogan "Obey your thirst"?

Answer: Sprite

Sprite is a lemon-lime flavored, non-caffeinated soda created by the Coca-Cola Company. It was first made in West Germany in 1959 and called Fanta Klare Zitrone (not very user-friendly). It was introduced in the United States in 1961 under the name Sprite. It became the world's most popular lemon-lime drink, surpassing 7 Up. The rights to 7 Up are held by the Dr. Pepper Snapple Group in the United States and by Pepsico in the rest of the world.
7 Up's slogan is "You Like It, It Likes You"
Dr. Pepper asks "Wouldn't you like to be a Pepper too?"
A&W Root Beer (since 1919) goes with the motto "Treat Yourself Everyday".
10. What product is "Kid tested. Mother approved"?

Answer: Kix

Kix is a cereal brand introduced in 1937 by General Mills and made from corn (and sugar). It comes in three flavors, i.e., Original, Berry Berry and Honey. In 1947, if you sent in a box top and fifteen cents, you could get a Lone Ranger atomic bomb ring (no, it didn't explode; it just had a secret message compartment and would give off a flash of light in the dark...it was a much simpler time).
Jif peanut butter had the slogan "Choosy moms choose Jif" (only moms shopped).
Sonny the cuckoo bird was "Cuckoo" for chocolate Cocoa Puffs.
Red Ryder bb gun was definitely NOT approved - "You'll shoot your eye out!".
