This is very sad news and the first I've heard of it so thanks for the post. Many years ago I did actually watch and enjoy cricket and I always have fond memories of Mr Shepherd hopping on those numbers. He'll be sadly missed by the cricketing world...the respect for him was evident in the number of world cup finals he umpired in as well as the countless test matches.

Apparently he got so superstitious about 'Nelsons' he once courteously declined Room 111 that he was allocated in a hotel in India, much to his host's bemusement..

I'm more familiar with the renowned wildlife artist David Shepherd and thought at first it was him who'd passed on.
I'm not a cricket fan, but David Shepherd the umpire was well known, and will be missed.
