I have just created a blog on blogspot and am wondering how to get a nice pretty background without too much trouble. Is there something that I am missing here? Also I would quite like to add a visitor counter.

For the counter, this site, this site, or even this site could get you started. Looks like there are plenty of different styles, and you can start your counter at anything you'd want.

How about one of those 'contact me' buttons, which open up a message window where the visitor can email the blog owner? Anybody know where I can get one of those?

There are lots of buttons out there, google "contact me button" or "contact me blog" and see what you like. Some also tell you what code to use.
Just a word of caution though... whatever email address you add to web code will be spammed. It might take a little while but it will happen. Many webmasters get around this by either putting the email address inside a graphic (because spambots can't read images) or they write the address in plain view but in a different format, e.g. peterrabbit at mcgregorfarm dot co dot uk.
Whatever you do, don't use your main email address on your blog. Get a 'throwaway' address from Google or Yahoo, use it only for the blog, and then if it gets spammed or someone abuses the privilege, you can discard it and get another one.

It was a pretty wallpaper that I was really after adding rather than gadgets.

Sue, I have a couple friends that use Blogspot. I even have a blog on there, but it has been so very long, I don't use it any more, can't remember and/or find my user name and password. I do understand that one can make it private if one wishes. And I really enjoy going to their blog and seeing all that is going on with them and their little ones. I'm not sure I'd like to put some of the photos online that I do see in blogs, though. I think things like photos of your cards and all you make would be nice. Good Luck!

Well done on setting up a blog! 
As you probably know  I use Blogspot and I will be more than happy to help you with anything I can - background image, clock, email picture/link, counter, other gadgets, colour scheme for the posts, header image, etc.
