I write quizzes that are somewhat eosteric, not necesarily America-oriented, but I know they are never going to be popular or become an editor's choice. Do I slog away in vain, or do I write about what interests me, and the devil take the hind-most.
I am not into video games, tv, rock music, sports, musicals etc.
That is my question, does one write for oneself or for the majority?
Suggestions. And by the way where's my new quiz! ( Joke)

The editors have a good feel for what will find a niche here or not. You'd be surprised at how many specialized quizzes do have a loyal following and fill a need, even though you might think you're the only one who would ever want to play it. Submit your quizzes and then follow the recommendations of the editors and you'll get the hang of what can and can't find a place here.

Englizzie, I say write about what interests you! Sometimes those esoteric quizzes are valued by a small but enthusiastic audience. If a topic is impossibly obscure, the category editor will discuss it with you.

Most of my quizzes are on niche subjects - obscure musicians, and out of print books. I don't feel that I am slogging away in vain, though - a few people like them, and that's good enough.

It's much more fun writing quizs that interest you - I've done a couple that weren't my usual when I was going for my 15 catagories and they were much harder work.
My two highest ranked quizs had only a small audience because they were specialised subjects but those people obviously enjoyed them because it was thier interest too.

Absolutely, write for yourself! Points don't matter. ECs don't matter. Popularity doesn't matter. Your satisfaction at a job well-done is all that really matters.

Actually the Editors' Choice is discerned to this type of quiz more often than it is to more popular topics.
If you have something far too specialized, we'll often suggest something to you to get you a bigger audience. Sometimes you can change the wording to make it more inclusive.
I know that when I edit, I'm reminded of a few of my library jobs long long ago where I was happy to get an example of something more obscure as you never knew when someone wanted to learn more about that topic. I used to work for a place that distributed curriculum on obscure topics like beekeeping and locksmithing as a career. So when I edit here, I am happy to find something on a topic that we don't have yet. You do have to assume that your quiz will be taken by those who wish to learn about the topic and not just those who already know about it.

Thank you all for your combined wisdom and experience. Having had a very broad life experirnce, there are a myriad of things on which I could write a quiz
I thoroughlty enjoy quiz writing and the research involved. I guess I will contnue to have fun, even if the humor is lost on the cutting room floor.
King regards to you all.

Please continue to write quizzes of the kind that you enjoy writing. They are good, and I enjoy editing them.

Your humor is not lost on your teammates Lizzie. You write quizzes about what you like and have knowledge of. Those that are interested will find them.

It can be rather dispiriting to put a lot of effort into writing a quiz and then find it takes for ever to get enough ratings for a ranking. And it is a good feeling when a quiz gets a lot of plays. You have definitely got to be interested in your subject - after all, if you're not interested, is it reasonable to expect those who take the quiz to be interested? I had this dilemma and have solved it by every now and again writing what I know will be be a well-played quiz but which is possibly not going to be particularly highly-rated. Then the wait until a quiz I feel rather proud of writing gets ranked doesn't seem so long.

Yes, it pretty much comes down to "art for art's sake" v. "commercialism," doesn't it?
To write a quiz I enjoyed making and wished other people made, or to write a quiz droves of people will love to play, that is the question.

Glad this is a playroom, not a workroom or a hall of academia!
